flywheel issues

had car in for some suspension work today at local indy in Yately, and he also diagnosed my flywheel is on its way, nothing to worry about just yet he said, but when you come on and off the throttle you can hear a slight clunk.. will this have any adverse effects on my driving experience other than a slight noise ? the clutch was changed about 25k ago by previous owner, and looks like she didnt opt for the flywheel at the time, pity

The noise is getting louder and one the you can't even start because one or some of the parts inside the DMF had said goodbye. I think there is no need for immediate action but keep it in mind.

In the short term I wouldn't worry too much about it but I have heard rumours (never heard of an actual one breaking up though) of them disintegrating if left for too long.

I have never seen a DMF collapse on a 996..

But i have on a Passat and a Shogun DID.. It does make a mess,it damaged the gearbox casing so badly on the Shogun the it had to have a complete gearbox

Either one for your next service or just get it done now IMO. If things go wrong it is only going to cost more, might as well get it right and enjoy the car.

Get it changed. If you're anything like me it will just drive you mad until you do. I wouldn't think it needs to be done in the next week or two though.

Then get a lightweight dms put in and let us know what you think of it!

I would think twice before going down the LWFW route, the engine does pick up faster but it is a fair bit noisier (assuming it is a single mass flywheel), it really depends on how you use your car. I wouldn't do it for a daily driver, but fine for a once a month Sunday morning blast.

I had an SMFW on the Audi I had previously - it only 'chattered' up to 1800rpm. I found the accelerated rev pick-up/drop-off more than compensated for the chatter (and I just turned the music up to drown it out :grin: )
