Hey Guys

Being a newbie maybe you can help with the Porsche etiquette on flashing other Porsche drivers. I have had mine for 18 months, I have noticed that only drivers of similar ages will flash/wave. i.e 80's 3.2's and 964's will flash and wave at me (85 Supersport) as will the odd person on a non Porsche who clealry likes the car. However anyone in 993 or above does not acknowledge my existance.

Now, you guys here all seem very friendly and appreciative of Porsches of all ages. So why is this?

Cheers

Gary

Funny you should mention waving, some one in a dark red 993 conv waved today i did the same back.

TBH i dont normally do the whole wavey flashie thing. London roads are far too hectic

Well I don't normally, its just that drivers of cars of similar ages seem very enthusiastic....So I just kind of joind in, I'm more of a responder than an initiator.

But I have noticed that it is more common the further out of London you get,

I think it comes down to whether your an enthusiast or not.

Must admit i generally do acknowledge all other 911s of any age etc but not boxters or cayenns !! (to many about it would get silly) (( also not really in the club))

That's a fair comment. IMHO the difference between the real enthusiasts and those for whom a Porsche is just a status symbol, is whether or not they wave. This goes for all Porsches, not just 911s. The most enthusiastic wave I've had was from a couple of women in a Boxter the day I got my 996. Even some drivers of older cars look at you like you're something nasty they've trodden in. I always wave at 911s and it does make you feel good when you get a big grin and a wave in return.

Just do it. If they don't wave back at you then at least you know that you're a better person than they are.

I was thinking of raising this very subject after waving to an almost identical C4s driver the other day and getting no response.

I think your right in saying that anyone who loves the car will acknowledge you, bikers do this most of the time.

Just watch out for those gay boxter drivers. It is after all a bit of a hairdressers car, isn't it? (sits and waits for World War III)

Every time I see another 993 I flash them, have had a couple of 944's flash me, so I flashed back, have flashed a few 996 and they all looked at me like I was mad.

A few times I have flashed various P-cars while in my BMW and wondered why the drivers looked so confused until I remembered what car I was driving!

Its nice to be nice sometimes, so I am not picky about which p-cars I flash... You never know when you may be stranded on the side of the road when a car you have flashed may stop to help you (Yuh! it could happen!)

I recently flashed lights at a lady in her old 944, who looked so pissed off after a long days work. When seeing me flash she almost wet herself with excitement , flashing and waving. Further on feeling good about myself and life generaly I flashed a 996, who just glared at me, I don't know if he felt superior, with me in a 993, or was getting pissed off with people flashing his bad driving.!

I now tend to flash all pre 1997 Porsches, but am ready to respond to 996 Guys should they feel inclined.

thinking about it, there is probably a good economic reason to flashing older models. Flash 924's and 944's and they will feel more a member of the community. Therefore, possibly making these models more appealing rather than the poor cousin image, which should bump their value a little.. and if their value bumps, the higher up the food chain it may bump up.

Or.. I could be talking utter crap, its been a long day and I have already had too many drinkies :)

I always wave to 911s of 993 vintage and older. I dont wave at 996 + 997 drivers as I find it hard to distinguish between keen enthusiasts and buyers of the car to meet an image.

Last week however I slowed down let a white 930 turbo out of a side road, and after 400M followed him inot a fuel station, he didnt wave any thanks and didnt make eye contact at the fuel station.........So I guess not even 'older' car's drivers are on the same page.

Its a shame 996'ers miss out, but don't blame you, i've given up waving/flashing as received exactly 0 responses in the first few months of ownership when i waved at any other 911(99% 996s).
