Ferrari ownership & ramblings

Please excuse the ramblings this post is going to take. :ROFLMAO:

I bought my 488 spider in June 23 on 3 year finance with Ferrari, I wanted to experience Ferrari ownership (something I thought I would never experience in my life). At the time I thought if I loved the experience I had a time scale of 2 years in mind to renew that experience.

At the time I had a C6 RS6 V10 stage 2 as my daily, but it felt dated inside after the Ferrari and I'd had it 10 years. Although I still loved it, with nowhere to keep it extra, I replaced it with a 992 Turbo S last summer.

The first year I drove the 488 more than I expected, 4500ish miles, including a Welsh 4 day tour, and a Euro 5 day tour to Spa classic. Since having the pork I've been using it much less (although it is winter too).

As a backdrop I'm looking for a home with extensive garaging to hopefully buy more toys.

So...to the point of the post...

The 488 came with 2 years warranty as a franchised car. In June it runs out and I'm starting to think whether to:

(a) Renew warranty? (expensive)

(b) Replace 488? Love driving the car, hate the in car controls (latest Ferrari's even worse) get a V12 Ferrari? Get a McLaren? (never been in one) Something else?

(c) I have lost more £ in the 488 than I thought I would in that time, but I think most of it's depreciation must be lost by now.

I know this comes across as a real 1st world problem, but was interested to get others views, especially if you have also had Ferrari experiences.

Just looking for other's thoughts?

TIA

bite the bullet and get the warranty................................enjoy it and keep it given you have taken the hit in depreciation

HI
Even though you may have lost money, you are in a great position
Im sure for many of us the 488 would be the natural progression from a Porsche
I would love a Roma as a daily driver instead of my 992 but those buttons for the controls :(

if the 296/SF90 doesnt excite then i think you have the best car

I think the 488 Pista looks fabulous -I have watched the Romans international buying guide -simply outstanding

Very much depends on what your financial pressures are and whether you need to liberate capital or have the flex to continue running the Fezza. If you’ve enjoyed the experience, I’d say extend the warranty (if the peace of mind is worth the expense) and keep it.

If you’ve had niggles, or fancy a new experience - then any of those suggestions (V12 F, McLaren) will definitely give you something to savour - although probably with equal or higher running costs (and risk if no warranty).

I've lost more than I had man mathed, but that's the whole supercar market I'd say in that time. I accept to lose on these toys.

I love driving the 488, I hate the controls literally dangerous to try to do things as you drive. The more modern ones with haptic are even worse. No idea what Ferrari are thinking. It's a massively frustrating/annoying part of ownership.

I tested and did the finance on a 296 GTS but didn't buy late in 2023 I dodged a bullet there with depreciation!

The 296 is ballistic even to the 488, I just hate the controls. I've heard lot's of electric faults with them too. But is that mostly sorted now they're out a few years?

I got a trade in price against a Pista last year, it was affordable but just not acceptable to me. They really have your pants down both ends of the deal.

Finance isn't as much of an issue really, apart from me accepting the losses "worth it" in my mind.

The bigger issue is garaging, I'm presently in an apartment with limited options. I'm looking for a home with extensive garaging near top of the list but not found yet.

I love the 488 (apart from the controls). It's such an event to drive, and I've only had good responses from people driving or parked. Just sort of pondering what to do, so musing on here for others views.

On the back of the man maths calculator there is a button that adds another zero to your calculations!

I insist you buy a Grigio Silverstone Pista -it will go up in value and you will die rich -just post pics and write reviews (post your current car in the meantime)

I was soured with Ferrari ownership and swore I wouldn't go back, so I can't help there, but I guess it depends what you want, do you want the newest and latest cars or are you more of a classic 'keep what you have' type of guy.

If you like the 488 then keep it and extend the warranty, especially if the depreciation has all but disappeared now.
I'm not sure the 488 will ever be a collector's car, but it'll hit a bump stop at some point and stop going down.

But if you're bored and want a new car then get a new car and accept the hit on depreciation.

It's an expensive hobby, trying to lessen the financial impact usually means a compromise on what you actually want, so if you can afford to not have to compromise then go for it.

Why not trade "down" to a 458, not as fast but better ;-) and addresses your controls issue as well lol

Even viewing it as starting from a new playing field I personally think the 458 offer a better overall ownership experience everything factored in but its obviously getting older now.

It was on my shortlist, I ruled out a 488 pretty quickly partly due to depreciation / inevitable overlap with 458 prices but as above my Ferrari experiences have been tainted over the years and I ended up going in another direction which I've have no regrets with.

As it stands with garaging/parking I've been tempted to trade the 488 for a 296 and a pista so far, but I guess I couldn't accept the losses as I didn't pull the trigger.

When/If? I get a home with garaging I could likely? keep the 488 and the pork and look for something more special for really special events?

Jontt I tested a 458/488 back to back when I was looking to buy. I was opposite to you, I felt the 488 was a 458 but just better in every way by 10-20%+to drive. Even the sound, to me, sounded the same from inside, just the 1000rpm extra in the 458. Worst day in history on the 5th March 2023 Man U lost 7-nil to Liverpool :(

Just pondering and rambling really. :ROFLMAO:

The thing with Ferrari's is you want to drive them, but if you do you destroy the value :/

Lol I put >30k on mine 🤣

Jon thinks he got roughly treated because of the Ferrari. Truth be told, it was because he's a scouser.
This week I has the privilege of seeing a mate collect his Mclaren. This is the 2nd of my mates thar gave gone over to the brand, although buying new is financial suicide due to depreciation, the 2nd hand market seems like a bargain when you compare the cars on the bang for buck chart*. So I'd definitely have a look at the 720S if you're looking at a change.

*Mclaren warranty mandatory

FZP, I've not been in a McLaren. Very keen to try.

what about an F12/812
If you are going to replace a Turbo engine then a NA would be best before they die out?
For me a GT3 is all i need :)

Like I said, I have a problem with garaging/storage as of now. I'm house hunting, if/when I get somewhere a 812 is well on the cards! And I agree with your thinking regarding before they die out.

I have never been in/or have any interest in EV's at the moment.

I'm keen to try a GT3/Touring too!
