A word of caution...

Just spent an infuriating amount of time on the web and phone trying to get (a hideously uncompetitive) quote out of Admiral and they are saying that unless you fully detail ALL factory-fit options, and they accept all of them, they will only pay to refit standard basic equipment (and only include that in the car's valuation / repair cost when estimating for a write off!)

So, if you don't want to get your car back with your £9,000 full carbon fibre trim replaced with grey plastic, make sure you give them a list of all the bits added!!!

I presume this is standard practice, but rang alarm bells with me, as theoriginal owner of my car went mad with the options list and spent a cool £24k on top of basic list!!! :o

So how would you prove the GT3 kit was FACTORY FITTED ?

You need the invoice from when it was new..

yes, but there are factory fitted options and dealer fitted options both pre 1st registration, I would like to think both are treated the same by the Insurance co ?

I agree - ought to apply to Tequipment items really too. They are supposed to be factory spec, fitted by factory approved installers...

Actually, I think my PCM might be tequipment as I also seem to have a Trip Computer :?
Either that or some plonker of a salesman didn't realise PCM includes a much more sophisticated version! (Quite likely, as the OPC salesman I bought it from thought it was cruise control - I think it even said CC in the used car locator details)

But if you've been sold the car, and say had it a few years now.. telling the Insurance it was factory fitted, but not on the bonnett sticker.. how would you stand ??

I guess there are a couple of aspects to this :

1) In the event your car was stolen how would you establish the "value" of the car for Insurance purposes, for which you would later expect to claim unless declared at the outset. The Insurance company needs to be able to establish reasonably its potential exposure. This would primarily be relevent to newer cars, since as we all know the options have a lesser impact on proce the older the car gets.

2) The Insurance company would say that dependent on which options you have may alter it's risk profile & therefore it's potential premium. Eg they may argue that a sexy set of wheels or body kit may make a car more atttractive to theives than one without.

They are still a bunch of crooks but there are always 2 sides to a story!

You will laugh, my GRANDAD (82) called me last year to say that he had a huge barney with Churchill Insurance as they asked him if he had fitted any extras and he admitted to UV lights running the whole length of the sides of his Ford Probe and they refused to insure him. In his seventies he was driving an Ford Sierra XR4i. He is considering a Volvo convertible now. The bloke can barely walk!!

On a serious note, i think extras are a minefield with insurers. Even when you get an advisor on the phone who doesn't seem bothered about it, it leaves you questioning is that right and am I properly insured??
