Once again today we have seen exactly how much influence ferrari has on formula 1. That "race" was an absolute disgrace and has put formula 1 racing back 12 months after they have made great strides forward this year to make it more interesting.I am also sure that will be the last race we will see in the states. Congrats Bernie on a job well done!!!! :(

hmm.. but can we really blame ferrari on this one? i know they opposed to the installation of the chicane on the 13th corner...

still farcial and agree that we probably won't see another f1 in the US for a while...

ar well, the have baseball and american football - am sure they won't miss F1 too much

Just can't understand, why didn't they allow the teams to use the new tyres and pay the penalty? After all, if the engine is bust, they change it and go to the back of the grid. Why didn't the FIA allow them to do the same with tyres?

Never mind all that. Did you see Blundell's shirt? Crime against humanity if you ask me to go out dressed like that! :D

I was a guest at a williams F1 test day at silverstone a few weeks ago, and whilst I have never been an avid fan of F1, I was amazed by the cars and the driving at close quarters. the cars are so fast (you have to see them to believe it- tv doesn't to it justice), sound wonderful, are and such wonderful pieces of high tech kit.

The shame is that political farces like this GP take away from what should be the pinnacle of m'sport.

I quite like that shirt, goes with my shorts! :D

Seeing GP on track is quite an experience, have been going to Silverstone for some years. When you're there, the atmosphere is great. The engines are so loud you feel it in you heart and stomach. Won't be able to follow the race as well as on TV though but the atmosphere alone is worth the trip.

a mate at work wore the same shirt to work on friday! (dress down day) - he got so much stick for it.

Blundell should have stuck with the itv polo shirt!

anyway, that was probably the most visually stimulating part of the whole broadcast....

oh, and may be the bit when Martin Brundle grilled Bernie on the grid walk!! :)

so from I can understand, Michelin could or should have provided spare set of tyres, or they could race but change tyres every 10 laps, why didn't they do either? I agree changing the circuit to suit some of the teams who're having technical difficulties with their equipmrnt is not right.

Basically, the michelin runners could either:

  • keep using the potentially dangerous tyres and change them every 9 laps based on Michelin's recommendation. That would be in itself enough of a penalty because none of them would stand a chance winning if they had to pit 6-7 times (although having a lighter fuel load because of the stops may lessen the stress on them?) But who is to say that they won't go off on the 8th lap or something?
  • or, use the tyre with a different compound that Michelin is suitable for the circuit. The penalty would then be due to the breach of Article 151c. The penalty isn't going to be as severe as an exclusion but it may mean starting from the pit lane / back of the grid or points docked.
I agree with Butzi that altering the circuit to suit some of the teams is not an option. It definitely won't happen if Bridgestone fcuked up.

I think good old Bernie and Max just got carried away with the rule book and forgot what F1 is about - the pinnacle of motor racing as a spectacle for millions of fans around the world.

Damn right Moto -

When Renault made suspension parts that failed they withdrew their cars from the race - so if Michelin can't supply tyres that will last then their teams should withdraw. Bridgestone were more conservative on their tyres and were rewarded with positions 1-6 in the race. The Bridgestone teams arrived at the event with equipment that was fit for purpose - don't blame them!

So it was bad for viewers etc. but rules is rules - I have to agree with the FIA that sticking to the rules is vital because otherwise you penalise the teams that did comply - eg. If they put a chicane in and took away the only fast corner on the track that would benefit all the runners on soft rubber - ie. Michelin and penalise Bridgestone runners who built the right (harder) tyre for the circuit.

Ruebens pointed out that if he had complained in Bahrain and the FIA had slowed down the one really abrasive corner there then his tyre would have lasted and he would have ended up on the podium -

Yeh, also if the FIA had agreed to Michelin's suggestion and altered the track, it would have set a precedent!

This is an important point because no doubt some of the teams would then use 'safety' as an excuse to try to alter the environment and exploit the rules to suit their performance needs. It's potentially a can of worms!!!
