Eurotunnel Porsche tax

I already knew that small cars paid a bit less on the Eurotunnel (my Mini for example gets a lower rate than a standard hatchback/SUV), but recently found out that Eurotunnel apply an indiscriminate tax to *all* Porsche models, modern and classic, on the grounds they're "either too low or too wide" for the ordinary carriages and need to go into the lorry carriage. So they pay above and beyond 'normal' cars, whether you're in a Macan or a 924, neither one of which is hardly a ground hugging, arch splitting monster.

What a load of absolute hoopla. I've had much wider and lower sports cars on the ordinary chunnel tracks than my 996 - but yet you still have to pay the Porsche tax as soon as you put in the numberplate.

There is, as always, a workaround. But felt this was a bit cheeky. Yes, some 911s are low and wide (and the option to take the lorry carriage should be made available of course). But not all. And certainly not all Porsches.

Rant over :D

What is the workaround ?

Really? Can you provide evidence of this? I've never seen or heard this before.

Last I got on the Chunnel, they booked me onto the low car section, and then just put me on with everyone else🙄
+1

I've not been on since November 2022 though 🤷‍♂️

Try it yourself! It’s about £15 more each way with any kind of Porsche (via number plate or make/model.)

Put in a different make/model rather than your Porsche number plate. You will then just enter your booking code when you get to the computer terminals on entry, as they don’t have a number plate on file for the auto recognition.

997 owners have to remove their bonnet while travelling on euro tunnel, didn’t everyone know this? Odd.

WTF, I've just had a go now. Can't see this lasting the swindling B***ards!!!!!!!!!

"If you have a larger car, low-ground clearance, gull/scissor wings or you have added accessories such as a roof rack, trailer or bicycles, you'll be shown fares for our single-deck carriages when you book."

I think all of the above is reasonable - what’s less reasonable is that they haven’t bothered to differentiate between a 924 and a 992. It’s more a question of “anyone who drives a Porsche can afford the the surcharge”.

Guarantee that if you turn up in a narrow body 993/996/997 you’ll (a) get fed straight into the normal double decker carriages and (b) have no problem at all! So why get charged the extra?!

Ironically I’ve made my booking for my other classic car, which is lower, wider, and has gullwing doors. But doesn’t appear on their system so is charged normal rate. So should I arrive in a 996, then they can’t complain that I’ve brought a higher, narrower car with normal doors than the one I’ve paid for

It ought also to be said that aforementioned classic also fits down the standard double decker carriages just fine, despite its preposterous width.

Wait.....WTAF?
Please explain
You're all wrong. It was Bonnet Run, which was exactly the same as Cannonball Run, just without the moustaches and shoulder pads.
