What are peoples thoughts on selling a car on ebay?

Also, forgive my naivety, but what are the safest ways to receive the money from a sale?

Have about a month to sell my 996 due to relocation to france and need to find the best ways. not keen on the trade price at the garage.

thanks

Advertise it on this website - what car do you you have and what were you offered?

Hello, bought and sold on Ebay no problem so far but there is always a first time. However Ebay is good to see what car's are going for price wise, to judge the market. Like any car sale best to view before purchase have a PPI done on the car etc,

The downside sometimes is that people get greedy as well end of the day you have a choice. You can get a good deal I did. :D

Trade price offered was £24/25k on a car that is worth in the region of £30k. Anything less would sting. Its a 98 C2 996, silver with black int, front and side air bags, 17 in cups, 50k, GT3 skirts and front.

my assistant just sold on Ebay a clio and the price was fair bit over trade. not sure i would spend 24k unseen personally. payment via draft on hand over to be verified jointly at your bank i'm afraid there are loads of criminals out there

Consider a sale or return through a dealer for zero hassle and a return above trade and not far from private.

If selling privately, ensure cleared funds in bank, or have verified bankers draft before title changes hands.

Ebay will act as a conduit for people to know the car exists, view the spec and make a bid subject to viewing, trial and/or inspection. Ebay buyers do like a bargain though.

Sold a car on e bay, got about 10 e mails a day from idiots asking how much i wanted for it. I thought the whole idea was you bidded what you thought it was worth?

Genuine buyers on e-bay tend to hold off until the final hours. From the cars I've watched, it seems there is a cut off value on e-bay. As said above, it is an interesting way to track car values but I don't think it is the right place to sell cars over £20K. It may also be that sellers expectations are actually above buyers budgets or view or real values.

There are a few sellers who achieve close to retail but generally, the more expensive cars don't seem to sell, perhaps because of the risk.

Sale or return would be a worth a try or a friend that may be able to act in your interests while the car is advertised in as many places as possible.

Trade it in for a LHD?

I bought my 993 Targa on eBay, and only thought even to look there as I'd read in an American in-flight magazine that in the US, more cars are sold on eBay than all other forms of classified advertising put together. So we might not be at that point, but we'll get there.

As to buying it, well I had a very good experience from my seller _but_ the key thing is if it hadn't been what they said it was, I wouldn't have paid. Obviously they weren't going to get the money till I'd had it checked. What are they going to do if you think it's a lemon? Give you one negative feedback point? It seems weird but basically it's just a classified advert but one where you can see what the reputation of the seller is beforehand with usually much more information about the car than will fit in a little advert, and where the price isn't certain but all things being equal will be closest to what real punters will actually pay.

For selling it's tricky: the adverts on this website do seem to be the best but are for people who know exactly what they want. You might get a different audience with eBay, and the point is to cast the net as widely as possible. I'm not sure on prices: my experience with eBay from selling all sorts of clutter is actually that people are as likely as not to get carried away and overpay. From dealing with family members who've thought of selling their clutter I also think a lot of people just inherently over-value their stuff, not that I have any comments on the value of your 911. If you can get more in a private sale than you could on eBay that's great but I would view that as good luck, not that eBay buyers are chisellers. People asking to end the auction early are annoying but you can do what I do: state that you will report them to eBay for attempting to circumvent their rules, and do so.

Good luck!

Never just accept a bankers draft without cashing it. A colleague did and the draft was from a stolen book. Bank wouldnt accept any responsibility. Basically swapped a 10k car for a piece of paper.

Thanks for the thoughts.

Does anyone know of dealers that do sale or return?

Anthony Corbett - Considered the LHD, but want to buy a place in france before I buy the car. Plan to look at buying a LHD turbo over here in 6-12 months and then driving it down. Prices look like £40-45k depending on milage etc. thats a lot of car for the money!
