Just in the process of moving to Dorset and need to find a good specialist that I can trust my baby to. Any recommendations?

I have been using Ray Northway as its been close to where I live now, have also used JZMactec. But have never felt that comfortable wherever I have been over the last 10 years of Porsche ownership of trying independents and main dealers. I really want to find someone who will love my car as much (or almost as much) as I do.

Several people I chatted to last year at Walton Hall were telling me about a Porsche garage in Bournemouth thats supposed to be the bee's knee's. But I cant remember a name.

I think in the first few weeks of owning the car all I did was take pictures of her (apart from worrying about every noise I heard and every spec of dirt she picked up!)

I will try to dig some out tomorow and post them.

Where would be a good place to post them? in this thread?

I notice one member here has a photo as his signature? how do I do that?

I think it's Jon Mitchell you are thinking of in Charminster, Bournemouth. Heard top things about him.

I bought mine from Bournemouth, and the guy I bought it from used the OPC in bournemouth...he was very happy with them, used them for everything....I even have receipt from the OPC for supply and fit of a new numberplate!!

I have used Jon Mitchell for a while now on all 3 of our Porsche and he is very good, friendly and his prices are much cheaper than OPC's.

I think he is still in Charminster at the moment, but I understand that the Charminster workshop was just a stopgap while the new unit is being completely kitted out from scratch. Last I heard they should be moved into the new place in march. But the website/page should have the new address once they move.

I used chapplegate (OPC Bournemouth) for a while, they have very nice coffee, but found they were ok (but expensive) for servicing, but anything more technical they were a little bit lost. especially on anything older than a 996 or boxster.

There were also rumours that Jon's business was heading towards being an approved independent, which is the reason for such an involved workshop move.

Last time I used him (about 2 months ago) he had a GT3 and 944 turbo race car there being prepared for next seasons racing. The GT3 being an australian race car and the 944 turbo being a Porsche-open car. So he is quite sought after and sometimes booked up in advance, which I think is partly due to his reputation and partly because his prices are so good!

Thanks Matt, Paul and everyone else.

I visited the website of Jon mitchell this morning.

Seeing as I had to go to Poole to sign contracts on the new house in Bournemouth, I thought I would pop in on Jon Mitchell's unanounced.

At first I thought the premesis were a bit small, but seeing a 993 turbo driving away, a 993C4 being worked on outside and a boxster and 996 inside being worked on (not to mention several other models outside) I thought that others must trust him so I went in anyway.

Anyhow, I am glad I did, Had a chat with Jon himself and a couple of his workers and they really do know their stuff and dont mind taking time out to talk to customers!

I was able to describe a few problems I have had in the past and instantly Jon knew what the cause was, even though the OPC's and main dealers seemed in those cases to struggle on for days to pinpoint the problem, when they had the car in front of them!

It does indeed turn out that Jon is in the process of setting up a new workshop in the outskirts of town, which should be open in March, so the current workshop is a stopgap between the old one where equipment is being removed and used for storing cars until the new one is ready. The photos of the old and new units look really promising. Still not as big as the combined JZ Machtech buildings, but still a centre of excellence in the works.

The outcome of this is that I will be trusting my baby with him for a service after the weekend and will report back once its done.

Thanks Paul for the tip with Jon Mitchell Porsche in Dorset!

The price was excellent, and the detail and care taken care of the car was second to none.

I am a bit picky about my cars, so I must admit I do spend ages checking the car out before and after servicing. In fact I would go as far as saying that I try to find fault afterwards and before the service I try to take efforts to make sure I know that things have been done.

Anyway, for the first time ever, I actually could not find fault at all... every point on the service schedule had been completed (and I checked), not only this but they even addressed several points which are not part of the schedule without charging extra, which I was really impressed with.

Apparently Jon has only been open in this country for the last 5 years, with the previous 13 years he was quite a well known specialist in the middle east (I checked this out too, am I too *****?!) until september the 11th 2001 changed attitudes towards him over there (Most of his customers didnt approve of the west bombing the taliban)

Also through some more digging and talking to contacts in Stuttgart, I found out he is probably the only UK specialist/dealer technician who is factory trained (rather than Porsche GB trained), whats more, he is Porsche factory race team trained going back to le-mans, cup and turbo cup days. Which he seemed embaressed about when I mentioned it (he said he likes to keep a lower profile these days and his blood pressure would not cope with too many more race cars on the books).

So, sometime Paul, we need to meet up for a drink, because I owe you one. The 993 is now in safe hands (going back next week for one of his special alignment setups and a couple of remedial repairs.

I think what I liked most of all, was that he took the time when I first met him to talk to me about what I wanted from the car, offered advice about how to improve on the service schedule for what I wanted. Whats more, while talking to him, one of his technicians litterally packaged my car (wrapped the steering in something looking like cling film and fitted covers to the seats, gear knob and handbrake lever) even though he wasnt covered in oil. Which was reasuring to see.

I would not hessitate on going back there and thinking about it, if I had found this company is scotland I would probably have considered driving the car all the way up there to have it worked on!

Anyway, I could not find the pictures of the car I was going to upload (on a memory stick somewhere) so I took some more at Bedford autodrome a while back and will upload those instead.
