Thanks Paul for the tip with Jon Mitchell Porsche in Dorset!
The price was excellent, and the detail and care taken care of the car was second to none.
I am a bit picky about my cars, so I must admit I do spend ages checking the car out before and after servicing. In fact I would go as far as saying that I try to find fault afterwards and before the service I try to take efforts to make sure I know that things have been done.
Anyway, for the first time ever, I actually could not find fault at all... every point on the service schedule had been completed (and I checked), not only this but they even addressed several points which are not part of the schedule without charging extra, which I was really impressed with.
Apparently Jon has only been open in this country for the last 5 years, with the previous 13 years he was quite a well known specialist in the middle east (I checked this out too, am I too *****?!) until september the 11th 2001 changed attitudes towards him over there (Most of his customers didnt approve of the west bombing the taliban)
Also through some more digging and talking to contacts in Stuttgart, I found out he is probably the only UK specialist/dealer technician who is factory trained (rather than Porsche GB trained), whats more, he is Porsche factory race team trained going back to le-mans, cup and turbo cup days. Which he seemed embaressed about when I mentioned it (he said he likes to keep a lower profile these days and his blood pressure would not cope with too many more race cars on the books).
So, sometime Paul, we need to meet up for a drink, because I owe you one. The 993 is now in safe hands (going back next week for one of his special alignment setups and a couple of remedial repairs.
I think what I liked most of all, was that he took the time when I first met him to talk to me about what I wanted from the car, offered advice about how to improve on the service schedule for what I wanted. Whats more, while talking to him, one of his technicians litterally packaged my car (wrapped the steering in something looking like cling film and fitted covers to the seats, gear knob and handbrake lever) even though he wasnt covered in oil. Which was reasuring to see.
I would not hessitate on going back there and thinking about it, if I had found this company is scotland I would probably have considered driving the car all the way up there to have it worked on!
Anyway, I could not find the pictures of the car I was going to upload (on a memory stick somewhere) so I took some more at Bedford autodrome a while back and will upload those instead.
