Closing in on 991 ownership

Had been browsing the forum for guidance as I research 991 ownership before pulling the trigger when I find the right car. I’ve now registered as I’m getting closer to that point…

Previously was a BMW M person (E46 M3, F80 M3, F90 M5) before deciding to save the planet with an i4… it’s too far of a stretch from the M5 so after 5 months it’s going!

I had a Boxster 987 as a 2nd car a few years ago which got me thinking about having a Porsche again with a move to finally getting a 911.

Originally looked at 997.2 models in the £40-45k range based on finance quotes through my bank, but after a discussion with a broker I’d used before, my budget can cover cars up to £57k which opens up 991.1 cars and some 992.2 cars. Having got into researching the 991, it looks a nicer proposition as a daily driver.

I like the 991.1 3.8 engine on sound alone, but the driveability of the 3.0T 991.2 on a daily basis is swaying me along with the updated PCM with CarPlay.

I’ve looked at cars at independents, but the 2 year OPC warranty seems to count for a lot given some of the posts on here. So it’s worth paying a bit more for that.

What’s peoples thoughts… £57k on a 991.1 or 991.2?

What about a private sale on a car with a full OPC service history and an OPC warranty? Makes a slight difference on the finance rate I believe?

I’ve not done any track days so it’s a car for the road (weekends and commute - backroads and M25)… C2/C4 or C2S/C4S?

Any key points to consider?

Hiya welcome

It comes down to finding the best car for your budget, which is most important, can't comment on finance rates

at £57k it comes down to spec, OPC Warranty is very useful and can be added to any Porsche
rwd v 4wd, is more of a driving preference but also might be based on what is available in the right spec

the biggest factor is going to be gearbox choice, as 90% of all options are PDK
If you only drive manuals like myself then options are limited
but if you're happy with the PDK then the market has MANY options

991.1 sounds better and the engine is more reliable. 991.2 is faster, nicer interior but the turbos are a weak point.

Car play and android auto can very easily be added to the 991.1 PCM so I wouldn't let that sway you.

I bought my 991.1 C4S privately and had the owner arrange the 111 check and subsequent multi year Porsche warranty (which I paid for) and then had that transferred to me. It’s given me the same level of protection as buying from a dealer. I chose the 991.1 as I wanted a non turbo engine and so far so good! Mine is PDK which I really like too - it’s more manual than auto in my experience. A month in Provence beckons soon - can’t wait.

991.1 are good cars. All the best!
I might sell mine if I find my next suitable replacement..

I’ll be keeping an eye on this topic as I’ve just recently sold my 991.1 C4 and can’t quite decide on my next fun/performance car.
Recently been researching F80 M3’s so essentially doing the exact reverse of your move.

I do wonder if you’ll miss the immediate torque of the M cars, well the turbo variants anyway, assuming you go 991 .1 rather than .2. But maybe that will become the charm of something different.

The F80 M3 was a brilliant car. Mine was the non-Competition model and wished I’d held out for a Competition as they look sharper in my eye. Quick, fun and practical for every day driving.

The 3.0L turbo engine is a bit marmite, I’ll never have another. Try and get a test drive in one and see if you like it. As people have said they also apparently have reliability issues although I never had any with mine so I don’t know how much of this is typical scaremongering. A Porsche warranty will nullify any worries about this anyway.

However , personally I think the 997 is a nicer car to drive, it feels more nimble, more alive, more 911-like, etc, but opinions obviously differ.

The 991.1 is basically the same engine but quite a different ride than the 997.2, so again try and get some test rides to compare.

As I said other opinions are available but I don’t think the more expensive and later model is necessarily a better choice, I’d genuinely go for a 997.2 over a 991, they’re really nice to drive and they are probably going to hold their price better as well.

I actually liked the 3.0T when I drove it, particularly for a daily car in town / traffic. The low end pull was far better than needing higher revs.

Some serious man maths and a helpful finance broker playing with quotes on different models and lenders has given me a decent budget number to work around so hoping to have one sorted in the next month

you cant go wrong with either -let the heart rule as you have already done your man maths :)

The sound of the NA vs the torque of the turbo
