Buying on the never never

As Mrs Eff is getting a bit pee'd off about it's condition, the time has come for me to get off my backside and do something about replacing the family wagon. As a by the by, it's going to be a nice f*** off 4x4 to p*** off the lentilists who I notice have started to leave their crap in the form of mock parking tickets and clamp signs on such cars round here.

I'm interested to know what others on here who don't rely on company cars do to finance their rides. If I'm looking for a car around £35k, the interest on a bank loan for half that for three years will pretty much wipe out whatever discount I can screw out of the dealer, plus I don't think what I will earn in the way of interest on the money I keep back in the bank will cover the interest on the repayments either.

I have never looked at buying a car this way before, so any advice gratefully received.

Richard to be totally honest with you, please note the following:-

Dont buy on finance if you can possibly avoid it.
If you are buying a 4*4 buy it second hand 18 months old, that way you avoid paying VAT and get it cheaper due to its depreciation, also it still has the manufacturers wtty on it.

If its 4 wheel drive only by Diesel, petrol are mega thirsty, expect teens mpg from any petorl 4x4 if your lucky, a diesel will give you high 20s to early 30s.

The best one out ther overall IMO is the Landcruiser,
buy a two year old LC5 5 door in Silver, it will come with no end of kit, is very comfy will piss off the green brigade and is good looking. You will pick one up for £25k.

Good Luck

Daz

Often wears sandals, lives in Islington and looks forward to the day that we all drive a Toyota Prius. Female of the species can often be identified by hairyness of leg.

stuff the lentilist's.....have great fun driving just in front of a prius...then floor it & see them disappear in a cloud of diesel smoke

Oh the RRS is pretty good but you might struggle to get one at 35K...& to echo Daz I'd never buy a depreciating asset on the never never...

Richard..... for the abilities needed for the urban jumgle, then a real off - roader should be avoided... I was going to say avoid Lancrusiers (as they won't get more than 9mpg and they are too impractical of certain parts of ken's roads!) and Disco's (not very reliable and that's from experience unless it's the new one but that's toooo pricey!) for that reason ! and avoid the Bnez ML as it's ~~~~~~~ awful period !

when means your choices are

BMW X5 (only bling/ drug dealer spec will do )

VW Toureag (TDI or no TDI they are all big!)

Lexus RX300 (not that big but very good!)

Volve XC90 (if you can find one, which might keep the tree lovers happy)

Old Style Range Rover (good value even if engines may not be cutting egde)

or

VW Polo 1.2E, as you kids can't be that big and a good time to join the tree huggers ?

Sundeep I had a landcrusier diesel for a couple of years, the new shape an Auto, and that use to do 27mpg alltogether, and that was the wifes car, so mostly town driving, on a run she would do 33mpg,

Where do you get 8mpg from?

Daz

Thanks Sundeep. As I divide my time between London and Wiltshire, have two teenage kids who are now taller than their mother, three dogs, and a mountain of stuff to transport, I can justify a 4x4 in London which most can't. It's a short list of one car, the XC90, or so Mrs Eff tells me! I'm not arguing or she'll hide the 993 keys!

<whispers...>

How about a Cayenne S?

Surprisingly nice, as long as you don't have to look at it for too long.

I had a lift in one and I was most impressed. Sounded lovely...

Not quite a big as an Amazon though!

Out of curiousity, why not finance a depreciating asset?

Assuming your repayments keep check with the loss of value, or better still there is a reasonable guaranteed future value to fall back on, then it means you can effectively pay the depreciation as you go along, rather than pay it all up front.

Of course there is the interest, but rates are fairly modest?

Surely the captains of industry in this site can better 6-7% p.a over three years on their capital? In which case might there be a benefit to not tying it up in a depreciating asset?
