Beating the impending tax change on EVs.

Bet you'd get paid through the nose for a wind farm off Silliband.

It's £195 a year as far as I can tell - and not something I mind paying as I use the road like everyone else. But it does seem odd that Mrs NDA pays around £35 VED for her petrol Audi, based on emissions, and my Tesla will pay £195 based on, er, emissions. My Morgan is the maximum at £790 (or whatever it is) which seems crazy.

My Taycan will cost the same as my V10 R8………£190 pa :ROFLMAO:

I think in Switzerland, if you have multiple cars you just pay road tax for the most extensive one on your fleet and none of the others. Makes perfect sense as you’re only ever driving one car
Adding it to fuel would also make more sense and a massive amount of bureaucracy saved…the more you drive , the more fuel you use , the more you pay.

A Rambling response....

U.M. really sorry to read of the demise of your trout farming business.

Where I live there were few pig farms on Dept of AG & fish smallholdings, which slowly came to an end as the result of a few linked changes in the way essentially small family businesses had to give way to the economics of what might be described as factory farming, combined with environmental issues relating to the spreading of pig manure on the fields as fertiliser, and then foot and mouth which seems to have killed off the last pig farm hereabouts, even after that I think there were issues finding local abattoirs for some, such seems to be the way of evolutionary forces..?

I guess there will be a few environmental regs relative to possible downstream effects of your thinking on the hydro scheme, but hopefully not as much resistance as seems to be building in India over China`s dam building in Tibet..! one of the locals has invested in glamping pods...

Trying to get the wheels off the grass and back on track.....

I bought into the idea of EV in retirement given both my wife and I had considerably reduced our annual mileage by quite some margin, also that her Evoque was now getting to the age where the LR dealership we bought it from as a new vehicle, were less than interested in working on a now 6 year old car, quoting 7 weeks before they might be able to book it in to resolve a wheel rotation sensor issue, only some months after it took them 3 weeks before they could look at and repair a very similar problem on the same vehicle... Kinda generated a thought that main dealerships will prioritise resolving issues on cars within running within their finance schemes and which given their age are likely to have fewer corroded components and fixings etc, equating to quicker turn around in the service bay...?

What to do, as working in my garage in my late sixties was requiring so much more effort than it once did....?

If I add my disappointment on ever increasing digital dependence in order to maintain any modern ICE propelled vehicle in order for it`s engine to comply with likewise ever increasing/altering legislative requirements, and that any modern/new machine that might during the lifetime of retirees such as my wife and I, and with minimal maintenance requirements, inconvenience & cost to us, an EV seemed worthy of consideration... With home charging and all the other convenience factors that an EV seemed to have potential to provide, for as long as we might be allowed to drive, and if one adds saving the planet thinking both personal and governmental.... It then seemed an EV may fit the bill...

A few months prior to buying the EV, I bought my then 9 year old 42k mile 991, and the costs and inconvenience of getting it on to the Porsche extended warranty scheme, serviced, and repairs under the scheme to resolve a COV issue, and a potential leak (drip) at the water pump to plastic coolant pipe flange... was not inconsiderable. At cost to me new battery and some maintenance precautionary stuff while it was in at the OPC. Whereas when we bought the Tesla and I asked when they needed it in for service, the reply was, "We will see you in three years when it is due it`s first MOT"...

OK, OK, so only two years into Tesla ownership at the moment, and as expected very few miles covered, almost 6k in the Tesla in the two years, and just over 6k in the Porsche over three years....Much may depend upon man maths in terms of making any "financial" comparisons, and for sure as coffin dodger my priorities differ form those I would have held in my 50`s or younger. On the convenience factor alone the Tesla wins hands down, no more petrol station visits, no servicing requirements in view for at least another year, even if then, semi regular software updates via home wifi as opposed to dealership visits as required by other EV manufacturers.... so currently all good. Though admit to keeping my fingers crossed to some extent.

For sure governments will ever act as governments do, to try to guide the population in any particular direction on anything...? I suspect one would have to be blind to history to think that taxation relative to the increase of the number of EV`s on the road, would in time alter any and perhaps all tax incentives in the passage of time..?

Now back to wondering if a one family owned long laid-up 82 SC with a few hundred miles use had cropped up around the time and priced at a similar value as my 991 when I bought it, might I have enjoyed it more, or would the SC have cost as much as my 991 has cost over the same 6k miles I have covered, and for those who prioritise investment potential (not I), which of the two would have potential to be worth more with the passage of time in the next circa 5 years, and perhaps longer....? Hmm. :)

Me..I suspect even although this is a real fantasy, in reality, I suspect that the 991 is the better option..... for ME.. (-:

To anyone laughing how cheap EV tax is, just wait, you’ll be crying once BIK’s and road tax get evaluated soon!

ive got a way around this - soon as BIK jumps up - i'll just buy the car from the business as it will be worth pennies despite not even having 20k miles yet

No I won’t, the business pays the road tax not me and …………. I would have had many years of the cheapest super car driving ever which was never going to last forever………in some way I’ll be relieved as I can justify paying a fortune in BIK again for any car I want……..oh wait a minute ……… there is a chance I’ll get incentivised to go back to a petrol car 💥

The irony being people forget that company car drivers where incentivised for many years to swap their dirty petrol cars for …..diesel

And then the icing on the cake, just when diesel actually started to make sense with crazy fuel efficiency they banned them.

Labour will soon be implementing another scrappage scheme.....watch this space.

Politicians from any colour shouldn't be anywhere near this or frankly much else as they know f'all and make decisions based solely upon winning whatever popularity contest that they are entering ! Tbh salaried civil servants could make better decisions because they aren't in any contests?

EV has never been the single solution ...and in the UK with our planning and productivity issues never will be ...I live in a small town with a population of about 15,000 so how many public chargers have we got ? ... 2 at a Tescos down the road 🤣

It's beyond a joke but the government won't see it (like with diesel ) until it's way too late ... Car manufacturing can see it and are trying to manage it but not politicians ...

It's a total shite show ...

as an EV convert - i completely agree!!!! I have driven on the continent many times in mine, its like night and day, all chargers work, they are all fast, they have great amenities running alongside, they are not in hard to reach places or have pull your pants down rates for the leccie - this country is like medieval in comparison. I am happy with EV (I miss the V8 snarling and spitting flames but this is faster and stupidly cheaper) as I dont really drive far in this country - usually charge at home and have solar panels - if i was to commute or even have to travel for work it would be a different story indeed! EV is not the answer, more money needs spending on sustainable fuels - Hydrogen is looking most promising but it uses that much power to extract it from the air diesels are generally less polluting.............

I've yet to see a charging point when I go down St Tropez.

EVs are like wind farms and solar panels. Great ideas but you still need a back up to rely on.

I had the Pannie hybrid - while tax favoured them, that was a great option..............in cities worked on pure electric to help Londoners with their delicate lungs

Bumped up as reminder for any private EV owners. Re-tax today to save a few £££s.
