After selling my 993 C2s to get married and buy a house, I'm missing it enough to try and get back into Porsche ownership. (Driven wifes 950cc Fiat long enough now)

I'm only going to have £10k to spend and need the car to be reliable for everyday commutes. A neighbour has a stunning 1970's targa, but suspect this is not the best one to go for. Would appreciate thoughts on what to spend my £10k on. Also, where do you go to get an older Porsche (apart from Auto Trader)

Thanks.

Simon,

Sub- £10K I would be inclined to steer clear of 911's altogether. You may be lucky and find yourself a bargain (partic. if you go lhd), but more likely to be a liability. For that money you are right at the top of the 944 range. £10K will buy you a tip top 250bhp 944 Turbo - fantastic car and very nearly as quick as a 911 (indeed quicker in some cases). These things can be tweeked to well over 300 bhp for relative peanuts. Pretty much bulletproof mechanicals provided the belts have been changed regularly - otherwise yuo can end up stripping cam teeth - nasty and expensive to fix !

Personally, though, I would go for a 968 (essentially a facelifted 944, but with more grunt). All 3 models are in your range Coupe, Sport or Clubsport - with the best compromise probably being the Sport (I drove a Clubsport round Spa last week and it's a fantastically capable car, but low on creature comforts). £10K will buy you excellent lhd of all three, maybe higher mileage rhd. The cabs look nice but cost a bit more and avoid the Tiptronics which are pretty bland form what I hear

I agree with Jamie about the 944 or 968. However, for £10k you should be able to get a nice SC or early 3.2. THere are loads of them out there and lots will be rusty (and to be avoided) but careful searching should unearth some nice ones. I wouldn't go any earlier to be honest (apart from a Carrera 3.0 which is very similar to the latter SC). Late 70's 2.7's are cheap but you would be better off with a 3.0. DOn't expect any of your 993 creature comforts with this generation of 911's though!

Cheers, James

Thanks Jamie. I was afraid that's what I'd hear. I agree, the 968 is great. Just want a 911, but think you're right. May well start lookin in 944 / 968 range. Do you think these cars are as solidly built as the 911's?

Simon,

Judging by the number of these cars still on the roads and pulling intergalactic mileage I would say that the build quality is every bit as good as the 911. The argument always goes that you should buy the newest car in the best condition that you can afford. In this case you'll be looking at an early 90's 944 or 968 with all of the kit power steering, ABS, leccy everything versus a late 70's or early 80's 911 with no frills. For everyday commutes I know where my money would go !!
