I'm finally going to take my Pilots Licence after years of talking about it, the wife has kicked it off by paying for the first batch of lessons.

Has anyone been down this runway and can point me in the direction of some good websites, etc and what i should be reading up on?

A friend suggested me taking a look at Microsfts flight Sim or similar but never seen it so not sure if it would help.

Hoping to start in a couple of weeks.(gulp)

Let's hope not Obzi. Good luck with it and have fun. One of the guys who works for my father has his PPL and is obsessed by spending as much time in the air as possible.

Just remember you can have more fun on the ground in a Porker so don't go selling it to help pay for your first stunt plane.

There is absolutely no chance of me selling the Porker but i have been wondering what i could get for the wife and kids.

One of my close friends is an ex BA captain but also does a bit of training for newbies wanting to get their lisence. I will ask him what he recommends. He keeps trying to get me into it but I turn into a bit of a jessie when it comes to flying.

Hi Obzi,

I have very recently gone down this route, and am currently a mere 10 hours into it.

2 things you should know:

1) It's expensive

2) It's compulsive

Therefore 1) becomes irrelevant as you can't wait to get your next "fix" regardless of cost! Once it really gets under your skin you'll find yourself reading websites, magazines, books and anything even faintly related to aviation, but the good news is, airfields are nearly always located down twisty country roads, so you'll also get to drive your car a lot more too!

One website I spend a lot of time on is
www.flyer.co.uk
as this has an excellent forum. The "Students" section answers virtually any question you're likely to think of, and they are quite a friendly bunch.

Look forward to seeing you there (or in the air!)

Anything else I can help with just let me know.
