997.2 Major Service Cost

Great video, I like the look of that. Is a sprinkle of NVH desirable? because I feel like it needs a bit. It’s funny how we’re (or at least I’m) trying to de-refine something intended to be comfortable. Feels like an oxymoron.

Actually, just saw a video from him 6 months later, he found the semi solid mounts had too much noise and vibration, he then used some 3M Wind Weld, which has a shore harness of 60.

He injected it around the gap in the the oem mount to reduce the amount of flex, and said it was a good compromise.

I bought some Sikaflex 255 to use on my transmission mount on the 996, that is also shore 60, I need to dig it out and try it.

I replaced my engine mounts after work tonight, I used standard mounts, with a Shore Harness of 65 I think, but to be honest, these are a bit too soft, I think 75 would be perfect.

My old mounts were actually feeling and looking OK once I had removed them, so I will dig out the Sikaflex and fill the gap and see what I think. I reckon a 60 shore rubber between the gap aorund the main bolt will work well.

Edit: Here is his second video...

Such a quality science experiment there. If I do swap mine, I’ll keep the old ones and try this.

Maybe I should also keep the rear silencer as well if that’s changed because it was only replaced oem 6 years ago.

I've just had my 79k-mile-old engine mounts replaced as part of a list of work done at the same time. I was quite surprised by the difference it made to the overall feel of the car, not sure how much is psychosematic but it feels just a bit more planted and a bit more urgency when I put my foot down. Not as big of a difference as when CG did the geo and replaced the various suspension components that needed doing last year, but definitely noticeable.

On the overall bill, can confirm that costs escalate quickly when you've got a list of things that need doing :ROFLMAO: Just had oil and filter service, new drive belt, engine mounts, coolant pump (was leaking) and exhaust heat shield (was corroded) done and it was slightly eyewatering (couple of exhaust straps and clamps came to £300 ffs!). I like to employ the traffic light method: get urgent stuff done now, get stuff that needs doing but not urgent done soon, and plan out upgrades and nice-to-haves to be done as and when time and money allows. There's no need to get it all done in one hit, though you may save a bit in labour costs if certain stuff is done together.

Only suspension bit left to do for me is dampers, and I am undecided whether to go stock again or upgrade. Someone mentioned the B4s earlier, would that make a decent difference or are they fairly close to stock?

Mine is in having B4’s right now matched with H&R lowering springs.

I’m also taking the “traffic light” approach but trying to add a mod I want each time also! Lowering this time.

Although now that will sort ride height I have now added spacers and 991 front splitter to the list also to complete the look… it’s a slippery slope!

OEM dampers are Bilstein B4s. Pete @ CG confirmed that to me when overhauling my suspension last year.

Yep, I did exactly the same but went Eibachs as opposed to H&Rs. Spacers are a must as the wheels sit even more inboard once the car is lowered. 991 splitter fitted using the EMC2 kit B is a great upgrade too.

I asked the seller to call me back which he did. He said I’d be mad to spend that kind of money on it if I was using it as a daily.

I wouldn’t really know if he was telling the truth or not if he was oblivious to the condition. He said it was perfect in a text when we first spoke but also said he only put a couple of hundred miles on it today.

He did take it to get the aircon regassed when I mentioned that I was thinking of driving it straight to Spain, it was one of the questions I asked. I couldn’t take it to Spain then unfortunately because the bank didn’t release the money in time so I had to come back.

He said I should get a second opinion and that it drove fine when he gave it to me. I’d say it was a bit raggy when I got it and whoever had it before ragsed the ***** out of it with the clutch included. He also said that clutches last about 25 to 40k in a car like that. I’ve heard a lot of different opinions on this.

Am I mad to be spending this kinda money on this thing? I gave the go ahead today because I just wanted it done. Should I get a second opinion? Friends green Porsche seem very reasonable. They are using some good used parts to keep the cost down. I wish it was half price, I told Luke last week that I feel like it’s ruined the ownership experience before I even started. It’s not quite borescore money but it’s not far off.

I think you should have met up with another owner, someone who knows these and could drive yours and give you their thoughts.

You seem to be asking the questions and then saying you have already decided. Haha.

You seem to have ignored everyone's advice anyway, so if it is a keeper just get it done and enjoy it mate.

I mean that in the nicest way possible by the way.

in future maybe get a purchase inspection before you buy the car, not after?

Ha yeah you’re right I am doing that aren’t I! 😀 I’m obviously talking myself into it. Sometimes you can’t help but second guess yourself when someone tells you you’re crazy for spending all this money.

I would take it for a second opinion but I’m a little pushed for time, moving away in a couple of weeks and just wanted to get it sorted. So yes I guess I have answered my own question. Looking to keep the car at least a few years, I’d only part exchange it for a classic.

We are only on this planet for a very short time, you have one of the nicest sports cars you can buy, it might smart a bit now, but when you get it back and it is all running sweet, you will soon forget about the cost.

I still think RSS semi solid mounts will be a mistake though and sour the work that has been done. 😄

New proper Porsche mounts, or some 75a mounts will make a big difference.

Ok I’ll take that advice, I can always add them later myself once I’ve got used it to running well. I was going to retrofit cruise as well, I feel like it’s become a bit of a necessity with all these average speed checks etc.

To chip in, a company like FG know these cars and are going to recommend what you need to do to get your car back to safe and reliable, but crucially also back to being a 911. Yes you can fix the essential parts and drive a car around. It will look good, but will it be like driving a 911 should be? You don't want your 911 to be like driving a VW or Volvo do you? If its all about what it looks like then save some money and don't do the non-essential bits, but if you want it to feel like a 911 when you drive it, and have the confidence that its going to behave like it should you will need to pay up. But at least only once and get it over with.

Personally I'd replace the engine mounts, you will be surprised at how much difference they make for a relatively low cost. I don’t find the harder ones an issue, but then I like my cars rawer.

Absolutely amazing advice from everyone, wonderful welcome to the community. I’m going in balls deep and getting it all done at once. Yolo.

I’ll post pics when I collect it and finished a couple of backdate mods I have in mind.

Mike do you want these wheels or they’re going on eBay? 😆
