996 GT3RS that was accidentally ordered in red?

I know the story and know the person that was allegedly commissioned to do the RS in red. My memory is hazy from back then but if I remember correctly it was for a dealership promotional thing and everyone (in Porsche) was fine with it until they weren’t, then it became a problem and was supposed to be redone back to original but it wasn’t and as far as I know it’s still sitting where I think it is. The only red RS in the world.

It’s not my business to throw names around but it was a well known story back in the day.

Really interesting stuff... So do you know if was it painted at the factory or afterwards at Reading etc?

I’ll check my facts before I say anything else. It was a big deal at the time with all sorts of legal threats and being excommunicated by Porsche etc.

I believe I might of seen this car several years ago at the Porsche gathering at the Silverstone Classic. Pic below:IMG_0607.JPG

I know where it is and who owns it, but it's not my story to tell.
It is a proper RS, registered as such and the only one like it in the world.

It doesn't come out much these days but it was never really hidden away and it's been used and seen by plenty of people, it's part of a collection of some lovely cars and if you're fortunate enough to see it out and about at some point in the future I'm sure the owner will share the story.

MOT database shows it simply as a Red Porsche 911 (not unusual for it to be none model specific). Its not had an MOT for 10 years assuming on the same registration

I’ve got one that is even more vague, it simply says multicoloured Porsche 911. Its a solid single colour but I assume either it’s because it’s PTS and they didn’t want to write the obscure reference down so put it as multicoloured, or it was a demonstrator and had weird graphics.

Some really old vehicles have very limited registration information, especially pre-war stuff where there were only a few vehicles in every town so didn’t need to differentiate so much.

I enjoyed hearing about it yesterday. I love the fact that's not his most unique car

I’ve seen (or heard about) some weird and interesting stuff over the years from various manufacturers that would occasionally turn out something that the management either didn’t quite know about or turned a blind eye to. A lot of them went on to be actual production vehicles but some just ended up being one-offs or one of a few ever made. Some were supposed to have been crushed but escaped somehow.

There are some great tales of British factory race bikes smuggled out in parts under peoples coats in the 50’s and 60’s that were supposed to be disposed of but the team managed to liberate them.

I haven’t heard of any 911s smuggled out under coats but there are one or two cars that perhaps shouldn’t be wearing certain special parts or even cars that technically shouldn’t exist but do.

I’m sure I read that the GT3 itself was a hobby car that managed to make it to production. It could have been binned at any point in favour of something else I suppose, an exotic transaxle or something if a particular head man got his way.

I bet that sort of thing is probably impossible now, the governance in place these days would never let it fly.

Well. I sit corrected. 🤓

You could probably get away with passing it off as something exotic because the factory would neither confirm or deny.

Put some stickers on and a crazy price tag and see how you get on with it :D

Yeah but y’all would be bombarding my CC listing with your comments :)
