996 C4S Hartech 3.9 - A diary

Im shorter than you and still the centre console removal, dished/ raised steering wheel has made a huge improvement. I've also fitted 997 seats and the drving position is great now. Funnily enough i sat in my friend 996 GT3RS the other day and whilst i loved the experience, the driving position was so much worse for me than my car!

I'm sure youll love it! If you fit the steering wheel you mention and it uses a Momo type hub, you can get an eccentric spacer that moves the wheel up 15mm and towards you the same amount. It all helps you get a nicer seating position.
Very cool. Love the steering wheel and gear knob and all of it!

That looks great. Come MOT time, can it be put through like that or does the original airbag wheel need to go back on?

I had also wondered that, because the MOT check seems to be for the airbag light working, not necessarily the airbag (by my reading of it).

But loads of people do the swap so must be fine at a sensible MOT shop 🤷🏻

In other news, our new passenger arrived…

which means the seat covers are definitely going on for the first few months 😂

Moss (the big one) is now so desperate for some quiet time that he even helped me clean the car

IMG_1055.jpeg

While we were cleaning it my neighbour wandered down for a look, spoke about cars for a bit before he casually dropped in his 997 GT3 RS 4.0 (which he subsequently pulled out of the garage). Hell of a thing that he had converted to RHD about 10yrs ago. He uses it for track days and driving all over Europe. A very knowledgeable and nice bloke who seems like a mega source of local knowledge.

He was dropping it at Ecosse in Bo’ness (of Max Power fame) later in the day as it was being shipped out to Spain for a big old road trip.

I will ask if I can take photos next time it’s out to play

Is that the infamous one that was written off and then converted to RHD with a new shell?

No idea

It was white and LHD is now blue and RHD is all I know atm.

Will ask him more when I see him next.

Yeah it sounds like that's the one, I think it was at Oulton for the RS day recently.

I think the back story is it was written off and a C4S donor shell (the exact same shell as an RS and what I'm using) was used for the rebuild.

Ye
yep that’s the one! That’s the exact tour he spoke about dropping the car off for!

The power of the hivemind

Assume Matt Collins is off of Ecosse then.

I didn’t think there would be two of them - although if it means anything to him his car is the inspiration behind mine. Mine will be an RS in almost every way except for one or two parts and an engine that I specified for road use - that may yet end up being ripped out and someone else asked to do something exciting with it. I might go looking for something 4L+ that is exciting if the 3.9L doesn’t do it for me. Maybe Hartech or Tuthill might have ideas.

As I said I wish now I’d have just bought my wife’s dream car, the blue/white 996 RS.
But I’m committed.

Aye. Sorry to hear that you have been committed pal, but it sounds like an intervention was overdue….🥁

Jkz jkz…

Your project looks ace and I am enjoying following it. I will pass on your inspo comments, I’m sure that he will appreciate them.

Looking forwards to seeing who comes up with what for your engine!

Thanks! As I understand, if you have an airbag as standard, it should be retained to pass. It passed fine still though, worst case it's not much to swap back if you ran into trouble!
