Small oil leak from the base gasket on one of the cylinders.

Continue as is for now? Or drop the engine, top end and barrels to come off to replace the gasket?

Any ideas on cost? (Assuming the rest of the motor is ok)

Thanks

depends on how much oil, if it's just drop then fine but an actual leak under pressure then it's more of an issue,
but worth checking it's not from a an issue with the oil filter

issue is just age of the gaskets and the material eventually starts to wear out

Hi

Its a lot of work to get at these particular "O" rings! Be sure it is that leaking and not something up above that just makes it look like the barrels.

The oil will not be hitting the heat exchangers so if small I would live with it. You could make a cup out of tin foil bung it up there to catch the oil and empty periodically. Stupid suggestion I know but I channeled oil away from a heat exchanger for a long time that way haha.

Best of luck

Berni

is there a drop or drip on the floor or just on the engine, the latter being usually a drop

Hi Chucky, I've had the same problem for about 9 years. It hasn't got worse and it hasn't got better. I have been using 15/40 oil since discovering the oil leak and all is good with the car. Mine only leaks when its cold, once up to temperature nothing. I was going to drive the car back to the UK a few years back to have a top end rebuild but then Covid struck. The company that I was going to use was AMS Porsche. I spoke with the owner, Angus Archer, a very helpful guy. The price back then was around 3500 sterling. They offer a very comprehensives rebuild with a full set of photos of the work they do. Worth a call and a chat if you are thinking of going ahead. You'll find them after a Goggle search. An owner on here has used their services and was happy with the outcome.

I've attached a picture of what I get after a run out and the car cools down.

ATB :)

Cost will be £5K to £10K depending on what you have done. There is another thread somewhere that I posted on after a chat with my Indy.

Depends if you have money burning a hole in your pocked. Most owners wait until the leaking becomes a bigger problem before opting for a rebuild. However, it is the main reason for 993 engine rebuilds.

Some say that the Porsche Classic oil 10w60 works well on smaller oil leaks, less than an engine rebuild.
Good discussion on Rennlist about it.
Horse.

Getting the lower cam covers done and will monitor the cylinder base gasket.
Not worth doing a top end rebuild as yet, so will keep an eye on it and the garage floor!

my 2p - I've chased engine oil leaks at various points over the past 15 or so years from the usual suspects - cam covers etc. My car is currently at Pickup Motorsport in North London having the latest leaks attended to - timing chest base gaskets, rear main seal and various other bits such as the clutch, engine mounts, various other misc parts (heat shields etc), and the chassis rails, as well as sensible 'while you're there' stuff that needs attending. Adrian (the proprietor) invited me back to walk through all the work that needed doing, parts that require replacing and also inspecting the vehicle, gearbox, clutch and engine while out of the car.

These oil leaks are the ones causing various drips on my garage floor, but i can see there are other far smaller leaks that would require a rebuild that will remain which i can live with as the oil is more caked on rather than weeping, and this is where one needs to know where to draw the line. I've heard about rebuilt engines leaking after 5-10 years - perhaps these are simply leaky engines. Also while having a rebuild done there will be tonnes of other stuff that would be worth attending to which adds up if you do end up saving up for a rebuild.
