The TL:DR version. Fault showing upon starting the car, "991.1 pdk fault poss. no R gear". Car won't drive, needs new gearbox.

Context: 89k Miles 991.1 Carrera, FPSH, OPC warrantied - thank god.

Car is daily driven and the other morning I had the warning when starting the car. It won't go into drive, but will select Neutral, which was handy as it could be recovered and taken to OPC, as it's under Porsche Warranty.
2 days later, they tell me it needs a full stripdown but it's likely a new gearbox job. I did some research and the distance sensors might be the culprit. Porsche don't open the PDK, but it could be fixed by indies, at huge cost.

I will update the thread.

A cautionary note, eyes open if you want to run one of these without a Porsche warranty. Both my cars have it, it pays for itself 5x times, easily.

sorry to hear that but you have the OPC warranty which is excellent news
what the timing to replace?
and maybe you will get a nice courtesy car

No idea. There was a question on my car's PDK service, as previous OPC had not recorded it in their system, but I have invoice and stamp (phew - another note, keep and scan EVERYTHING!)

They're stripping the car today, I reckon it will be a while. I don't need a courtesy car until Wednesday next week, and I have a great excuse to commute to work on my Harley with the good weather.

I have had a similar experience, on another recent thread.

I contacted a recommended specialist (Berlinetta Engineering) and spoke to the owner. Very knowledgeable, he advised me that Porsche are under contract with ZF NOT to break open and repair the PDK, so if you have these issues its a "new gearbox, thank you sir" conversation. Sounds like you have the OPC warranty coverage that softens the blow a lot. I didn't, but have an aftermarket one that will hopefully cover most of the costs.

Apparently the issue is the seals around these sensors were weak and will break down and eventually leak, causing oil to affect the sensor readings and confusing the ECU. Potentially catastrophic if it decides to pre-select a really inappropriate gear at high speed! I guess that's why it fixes you in one gear if you are driving, just in case, or refuses a gear if stationary.

BTW, on their website for Berlinetta to strip the gearbox out and down, £4K labour. Plus another £3.25K for (upgraded) sensors for both speed and distance. Still WAY cheaper than a new official gearbox - £20K maybe?

Thanks - I did see your thread and I did not want to hijack it. I hope you find a good solution. There's a specialist near me (North East) who are apparently great at fixing these, but I have no direct experience.

I'd expect my costs for this to be zero given what the warranty with Porsche is for

I had a similar issue at 63,000 miles. Porsche warranty, new gearbox, zero cost. 😁 At 94,000miles now and no issue so far. I believe the gearbox they fit is updated and slightly different. I believe it’s the early 2012 & 2013 models that may be affected but someone on here may be able to elaborate on that. Good luck with the repair

spot on - early models were affected the most, so likely a new box is the "later" version.

I'm currently in a kettle Macan as courtesy car, the warranty will cover a new PDK (Gulp!). No idea how long this will take.

Update - hopefully the final one: Gearbox replaced under warranty. I can't bear thinking what it would have cost if I'd had to pay for that. I decided the electric Macan is not for me yet. Too wide, not connecting with it. So my Macan will likely be replaced by another ICE Macan.

That is a result indeed. (y)
Shows the value of having a Porsche warranty.

Yes, I wouldn't go without one if the car can have it. (I have two cars on these and they must have paid for the warranty 20x)

Great result OP. Out of interest, what does a 991 OPC warranty cost these days? When I last had it on my car about 10 years ago I was paying around £1200 PA (inc the inspection fee)
