991.1 C2S buying advice please

I’m really wanting to scratch the itch and get myself a 911, especially whilst my kids can (hopefully!) fit in with me rather than it being just a ‘me’ thing.

I’ve been looking for a while now and pretty sure its a 991.1 I’m after and specifically not in black, although love the look of them in black but just can’t cope with the full time job of maintaining it!

Ideally it’d be a manual GTS (if I could afford) or at least a manual but that’s purely out of ‘gut’ and the more I’ve read I’m sure I’d be happy with either and it certainly widens the choice including PDK.

I’ve seen this one for sale here but having never owned (or even driven one) I’m unsure if it looks OK or would be best avoided due to combination of mileage and previous owners (8). On one hand I feel that each owner would’ve ’had something new’ and they’d want to maintain and look after it or at least it would need to be well presented come time to sell, but obviously no idea if private or trade sales, so all guess work of course.

I work from home so although I would be planning to drive it as much as possible I can’t imagine being able to put more than 5k ish a year on it if I’m being realistic. Although the idea of making time for more road trips certainly appeals. So maybe the higher mileage of this one could even out?

Is there anything that stands out to you guys that says ‘best avoid’? assume getting a PPI is pretty much a requirement but would really appreciate any views or opinions on this please.

In my head I’d buy and keep ‘forever’ (or at least a considerable time) but having never owned one (or spent anywhere near this kind of money on a car before) and being realistic, who really knows what the ownership experience will be like until you’re in it so to speak. But imagine it’d be at the very least four/five years…

Anyway, enough rambling!

Thanks in advance

The spec looks good .
Have a look at its MOT history and also the service history which would give an idea as to whether it was cared for.
Be a bit wary of buying something without an official Porsche warranty ( firm believer) and as you say a full PPI.
All the best!

In the advert it looks like a nice car at a competitive price and I thought that might just be because of the mileage/number of owners.

Then, I noticed how long it's been advertised for. (13 months according to Autotrader !) The market is slow at the moment but I'd normally expect a car that seems to be priced right to sell.

The fact that it hasn't sold makes me wonder if it's not actually as nice in the flesh/metal. Silver is a very difficult colour to match if any panel(s) have needed paint - even if the reason for the paint was just something like stone chips on the bonnet and wings. If the job hasn't been done well the results can be awful and cause viewers to just walk away.

There are a few 'S' cars around for c£40k but your choice will be much wider if you look at 3.4 cars. You'll get a later and/or lower mileage car for the same money.

Thank you both, really appreciate your replies.

Definitely given me something to think about, specially the Porsche Warranty (or lack thereof on this particular one) and didn’t realise the length of time it had been for sale for.

That timeline alone makes me wonder ‘why’ ? 🤔

Interesting point regarding colours and potential re-spray and/or paint touch ups. Not something I had considered but like you say could well be a reason why it’s hung around?

Difficult to tell on pictures and not local to just swing by and inspect. Will see if they can share further details regarding MOTs and servicing and see what information I get.

Thanks again and welcome any further comments and input.

Regards

If you can get registration number, you can check the MOT history yourself and I am almost sure an OPC will be able to tell you the service history.

You said that you would like a manual car, and not black. Ashgood have a nice one for sale currently that ticks both boxes and also has a nice spec (IMO).

I bought a 991 GTS from Ashgood a couple of years ago and they were fantastic. Don't know how local you are to Ashgood but they are easy to deal with. They also have a good relationship with Porsche inspections which you can have done for peace of mind.

Do some detailed searching and reading to find 991 potential issues, there are some, but all 911s have issues, so you have to try and take a sensible measure of what you read. And I'd do proper searches on wherever you're considering buying it from, there are some really ropey dealers out there.

The cars you're looking at are too old for a Porsche warranty and they're at that awkward point where they're out of warranty and people might be trying to sell troublesome cars. So I'd say the only thing you need to avoid is buying right at the top end of your budget and then struggling if it has an issue.

The 991 feels like a massive leap from a 997, they're really different cars to me, I was initially quite pleased at how flexible the 991 felt but after a few months it felt a bit less exciting than I wanted. The 997 mostly retains that 911 "feel" of being small sports car, whereas the 991 feels like a supercar, it's wide and ungainly, less nimble.

So I'm biased because I've had 991s and I feel like a cheaper well sorted 997.1 S is a more fun car and would be a better place to look if you have £40k in your pocket, they feel small, nimble and fun, and you could buy one with a proven rebuilt engine and bank the rest for maintenance.

I'm convinced this is good advice, but other people with similar experience will disagree, so you can only really take it all in and then make your own call on it.

2012 cars may not be eligible for a Porsche Warranty due to service history and/or non-standard parts fitted but it won't be because of their age.

The Porsche Warranty can be applied for until the car is 14 years old so 2012 cars could still get a 2 year Warranty at least.

Oh yes, it used to be 10yrs but I saw they've extended it to 15.

However, if it's not currently under warranty, and hasn't been for a while, then if they are willing to cover it they might want a considerable amount of work done to get it up to the standard for them to warranty it, and my guess is that they'll load that work to make sure they're well covered, they will want everything to be like new.

I'd have no worries buying a 991 that was currently under warranty, I've had no issues with OPC warranties, they never quibbled on mine and just did stuff without any dramas.

Hi all

Thanks for everyone’s input. Super helpful advice all round 🙏

@jpsh120 cheers for the heads up on the Ashgood. It looks pretty much spot on…except the brown interior, unfortunately that’s just not for me. Huge fan of modern tan interiors but personally think I’d struggle to live with the Porsche ones of this era. Although really love the light interior they had for these but I think if that went on to my list of ‘must haves’ I’d be narrowing my choices down dramatically.

Anyway, messaged the garage today and not heard a peep unfortunately so no further details to uncover about its overall history so I guess not looking strong for that particular car all things considered.

Will keep looking and see how the market is over the next few weeks/months. Not an emergency purchase so happy to wait for the ‘right’ one.

Thanks again for everyone taking the time to read/post.

Great community and learning a lot from reading the forums.

Indeed - I can't abide by dealers that aren't transparent about the full history of a 40k+ car in the actual advert (compared to more diligent non-OPC dealers such as Ashgood or Cameron etc.. It could be fine but they make you do the work while waiting for someone that comes along to buy because 'they like it' on impulse. That said it is an excellent spec car so it might be worth digging a bit as others suggest. You would be the 9th (or 10th) owner in 14 years and you will be robbing yourself if you don't add many miles to it, so be prepared for depreciation.

No problem. I had cocoa brown leather in my boxster and it was lovely, but if it's not for you then never mind. Good luck with your search.

Hi again, didn't want to leave this thread hanging.

Just an update to say that there is no update. No contact from the garage/seller so obviously not going ahead if unable to ascertain basic information.

Still looking but (as I imagine is quite natural...) going back to looking at 997's too. Some get quite close and even cross over on cost, even for 'lower end' ormolu basic models that I'm looking at. Although going to earlier 997's there do seem to be some nice looking ones (and I do love the look) but obviously always have the dreaded bore scoring/engine rebuild dramas hanging over any potential purchase which makes me very nervous.

Anyway, thanks again everyone for your collective input

Early 981/991 can have faults with the electric power steering. Only solution is a new rack ~£3.5k. In 14 they got the updated rack
Then it's the usual cross over/brake pipes/ac condensors/rusty rear rotors.
A nice 997 GTS in the for sale section of the forum😅.
