You mean the silver linen one with the picture of himself next to the car?

That's the one. Guy was very nice - had 45 calls but still returned mine and had a chat.

Fair dincum. But in this market...?! ;-)

I'm making something special with it. A personal keeper. Will start posting the project when it gets underway in Jan.

Ah cool... I do like to see the hard work others invest while i tinker and wax :-)

Still looking if anyone has anything interesting... :thumb:

Dont get to hung up on engine rebuild ,10% truly need doing my last 964 had done over 160,000 miles before the engine gave up

Also the word rebuild is a word used to cover a lot of stuff when a seller is putting one to market

Peters Blue 964 supposedly had a rebuild when he purchased it I watched it spay neat oil out of the tail pipe all the way to Le Mans ! and back

Also Oil leaks do not equal rebuild  unless there is tons of smoke coming coming out the exhaust pipe or is misfiring and very down on power ,these little cars are not made of chocolate

Oil leaks a just par for the course on a 964

Keep looking there are some great non rebuild cars out there

Wise words Mr C.

When I was looking to buy I spoke to a number of dealers and other experienced folks and one Porsche Indy was emphatic about the engine quality of 964s.

He said he would ONLY sell 964s if he could find enough. He warrants them himself for 6 months with unlimited claim limit (and mileage i think) such is his confidence. He told me pretty much the same as Mr C, these things 'sweat' oil which is of no concern. He told me never to confuse a 'leak' with 'sweat' and to ignore the scaremongering many peddle about the need for engine rebuilds on 964s.

Of course some let go spectacularly, but ALL engines do at some point. In his mind the 964 engine is less likely to need a rebuild in its lifetime than almost any other.

Agree with these comments. Look at the high mileage 964s in the US. Very few appear to have engine rebuilds.

For me the issue is with the earlier engine that needs stripping down to resolve oil leaks or, and this is my view of why engines need rebuilds, the rocker shaft bolt can work loose and interfere with the cam causing some expensive yet repairable damage.

In the US thee is a locking nut system available to prevent shaft bolts working loose. Those that have had their engine let go, how many noticed an increase in tapper noise? Fortunately for me I heard one bank sounding noisy, had it looked at ASAP by indy who noted one rocket bolt had started to work loose :nooo: But luckily no damage done :thumb:

would it be a wise choice to get the later models 1993 versions due to the revised parts mentioned?

Not really given these cars are 20+yrs old so any issues will have been resolved long ago. It was just that early cars didn't have gaskets.

I've seen cars with rebuilds on less than 40k - these I suspect were to rectify oil leaks not parts going pop.

Before Frank's 'Black Betty' went the route he did the original engine had developed a fault. Early indicator - you guessed it noisey tappet sound on one bank. IIRC he posted a video of the noise up on RL asking for advice. Hence when I heard it on mine I was shaking like a shitting dog :what:

Do you still have a link Brian? I would like to hear it...

Would the opinion on here also be that engines on cars with tiptronic gearboxes have had a more relaxed life hence less wear?

Less wear but same oil leak/sweating

My advice drive a tip and a manual there is a world of difference

Tip will be a easy find and less money I guess it depends on what you are looking to get out of the car

JCX - Cant find the link. It's on RL somewhere posted by Frank but I gave up looking last night with my limited search skills

The i will have to apply my mercurial search skills... :dont know:

As said don't dismiss a car that's had no rebuild. If its got good oil pressure, sounds ok and there's not blue smoke pouring out the back, there's not wrong with the engine so no rebuild necessary. :thumb:

Mine has 114k on the clock, 5 bar pressure under acceleration, 2.5 bar cold tick over and 1 bar tick over when hot, normal for a 21 year old car. (touch wood it stays that way ha ha).

I honestly believe a lot of these cars get rebuilds for oil leeks when they don't even need them?
