Have any of you previously owned or even driven a 944. I'm thinking about getting one early next year, and only spending around £6k. Am I crazy? I was wondering if there are any known problems, or if you think I should steer clear of a £6k Porsche of any description altogether!!

had a 944 Turbo 11 years ago..........and again own the car i traded in for it,which is basically a slimline 944.......ie the 924S............anyway back to the '44............the best compromise between decent performance and decent running costs is the S2 from 1990 onwards ........the range comprises of

944 lux 2.5 8v 82-88(163bhp) coupe

944 lux 2.7 8v 88-89(165bhp) coupe

944S 2.5 16v 86-89(190bhp) coupe

944S2 3.0 16v 90-92(211bhp) coupe/cabrio

944 Turbo/SE 2.5 8v(220bhp 85-88 and 250bhp 88-92) coupe/cabrio(1991 only)

if the engine is smoky best avoid.........they need a special coating which makes it uneconomical to repair its easier and cheaper to buy a replacement engine, they have a bit of a diff-whine(pinion bearings),electrics/switchgear IMO are pretty weak, and although galvanised from new there are some showing some pretty bad rusting these days

I've tried a 944 s2, which was very good bar a couple of reservations. The interior is on the dull side, and could do with a new steering wheel to jolly it up, maybe one with the Porsche badge.

The engine note is, well, a bit of a noise. It could do with a different exhaust to make it sound better.

Are there any aftermarket products that you guys could recommend, to turn me away from a Lotus?

I run a '91 S2 with couple little tweaks. The interior is as you say, but the steering wheel upgrade (momo or genuine Porsche RS wheel) does the trick. Be sure to look for one that has undamaged interior.

The engine note.. You can ask some performance pipes from Porsche part dealers, there are some around. I have just deleted the cat... It's acutally the 16v roar that drives me to accelerate ;)

The std S2 pumps a good 211hp - the fact can it do it depends on the engine status. Mine has a bit more, it has a chip, filter and the pipe. There are a lot of aftermarket chips around, look for one with good torque curve.

S2 is good for 220-240hp, to gain ~300 is possible but very..very expensive. If you want lots of power go for the 951, but you get the turbo lag and the fact that before 3k rpm it won't play the game so much.
