Once again, there has probably been a thread on this subject but has anyone carried out an upgrade on the 911 lamp units?

I don't use the car much at nights, so it came as a real shock when I had to seriously slow down on an unlit stretch of 3 lane carriageway (on the way back from the Curry night). Even with the lamps adjusted upwards, I could not see far enough ahead to be safe.

I've spoken to a friend who does the tlc stuff on some of my cars and he has suggested replacing the reflectors and upgrading the bulbs to 100/100 's with appropriate relays.

But, given this is probably a problem with most of the older style units, it may well be that there are some good tried and tested solutions out there.

Any comments and or guidance would be welcome.

doe any of the reflectors from the later 911's work, I am assuming up to a 964 ?

upgrading to 100w bulbs I assume you are talking about is possible ? but would need to be switched back at MOT time....

unless of course you fit xenons (?) seriously worth considering, (as youe man should be capable of fitting them) much more effective than 100w bulbs...

But are there any Xenon kits for this type and, if the reflectors are c##p, will they improve the vision?

xenons don't use reflectors, it's just all from the bulb

I suppose I should have known that :P

Have you installed Zenons Sundeep and if so, what was the kit, how much and is there an improvement over standard?

1st question is what type of bulb does the 930 take ? and the bulbs only take 35watts of power so they don't need extra relays

improvement = YES by a country mile !

the question is how the headlamp glass front will work with the xenons? as they are designed to operate through clear glass (so there is no heat reflection), rather than the version on all pre-94 911's...

but it may work ?

certainly worth an experiment ? unless you go for a seperate set of xenon powered driving lights ????

AC

seems that the H4 Pilot 2 kits do work on your 911...

from ther PCGB board...

"Following on from the thread on the 993 board, the xenon kit from HIDS4U - the Pilot 2 kit I think at £260.00 to PCGB members (about £279.00 otherwise) - does fit a 964, and so will fit a lot more, very easily. Camtune did the job in 30 minutes"

you know it makes sense !

Thanks for that Sundeep.

I'll give Camtune a call. Also found Xenon kits and 964 lamp units on design911.com and wait to hear what they recommend.

Interesting to see that you can get into the PCBG forum. I've spent hours trying to sort out browsers and firewalls and still can't get in! God knows why it should be such a problem.

Case of it doesn't work don't fix it???

Going to be a little controversial here....I know Xenons are great when they are on your car and enable you to see the road in amazing detail....but....everytime I face a car in oncoming traffic that has them fitted i spend the next minute blinded from the brightness. This is depsite not looking straight in to them, infact turning away. I get my eyes tested quite regularly and I'm pretty sure there's nothing wrong with them, so I'm not convinced Xenons are the safest invention on the road!!!

Design911 = NO ! kit is old and expensive...

H4 kits from
http://www.hids4u.co.uk/
which need to be the PIlot 2 kits..

the price quoted on PCGB wasn't done by the club but by me for ANY PORSCHE OWNER on normal or pilot HID kits... but there wasn't any more info on the pcgb site, so you're not missing much

as for the PCGB site, assuming you are running 'Norton Internet Security 2004' onwards you need to disable it in order to access the site... not sure about other firewalls.. but don't forget to turn it on after you leave !

964 lamp units.. you'll have to figure out what the differences are between the 930 and 964 to see if there is a benefit...

I've spoken to the service manager at Camtune (V Helpful) and they are currently fitting a kit to car. We are going to speak again when they've had some feedback from the owner.

With the current weather forecast, I don't suppose I'll use the car much at night for a while :(
so, having decided that Toy is probably a keeper, I'm going to make more enquiries and probably take the car down to them to get some other niggles sorted.

And why should I shut down my office firewall to access the PCBG forum web site. Is it me or is this a rather backward step?
