918 in flames at petrol station

Just read this

Porsche has never been a company to let Ferrari hog all the glory, so when we heard a LaFerrari went up in flames, we knew a Porsche 918 Spyder wouldn't be far behind. This one in Toronto looks like it was engulfed in an inferno, as befitting any proper supercar. And so, it begins.

Judging as how we haven't yet heard of any exploding Canadian gas stations, however, this one might've been put out before the whole establishment combusted in a miniature mushroom cloud. And since it happened at a gas station, it actually is plausible that the fire here originated somewhere with the fueling equipment, rather than the car.

No matter what the cause, there's now one less Porsche 918 Spyder in the world. And for that, we're all a little sad. So pour one out tonight for the dearly departed monster.

Except don't pour out any gasoline. I hear it's flammable.

Not again Porsche, not again

Seems like most are assuming it's 'user error' with the fuel filler being so close to the exhaust. I'd not have thought of that as a problem but looking at it it is very close, surely Porsche would have thought about/ tested this scenario?

I guess more information will follow but this is potentially quite embarrassing for Porsche after the red-hot GT3 fiasco.

Such a waste! Surely not a manufacturer issue.......mental if it is.

CCTV footage apparently shows the owner using a squeegee to mop some spilled fuel from the side of the car - seems that some of it got into contact with a hot bit triggering the inferno. Whatever the cause of the spillage it would appear the owner was a bit unfortunate in his attempts to protect his paintwork :nooo:

That will put the Insurance premiums up for pork in the Toronta area.... 8)

Sounds like an Insurance Scam to me, couldn't be that hard to fill it with fuel could it :?:

Somebody suggests fuel will not ignite off an exhaust manifold.

Static discharge can ignite petrol vapour. If it was an accident this was probably the cause.

Although small in number, these fires happened when over 90 % of drivers were wearing rubber soled footwear while filling up.... Re trainers and the likes.

People assume the car had a fault that caused the fire. The fact it was being fuelled at the time of the fire and that the owner was messing about with a fuel spillage all points to an accident caused by the owner or whomever soiled the fuel.

im not sure that's mitigation?
I as have almost every person on this forum spilled fuel at some time down our cars, either from a careless moment, or from a back pressure from the fuel pump, and suffered no fire, either way a Porsche should not catch fire if over filled or if the owner was a bit clumsy, this should fall under research and development, and H&S

seen this happen before on a 918. Daft place to put exhaust
