VW to Build Facelifted Porsche Cayenne SUVs at Osnabrück Plant from 2015

Volkswagen has announced that the Porsche Cayenne will also be assembled at its Osnabrück plant from summer 2015 due to high demand for the luxury SUV. About 20,000 facelifted Cayenne SUVs will be built in Osnabrück each year, following a €25 million ($33.8 million) investment.

Currently, the body shells of the Porsche Cayenne are built at VW's plant in Slovakia, painted and then shipped for final assembly at the Porsche plant in Leipzig. The decision to shift a part of final assembly to Osnabrück has been made because the Leipzig facility is at maximum capacity due to strong demand for Cayenne, Macan and Panamera models.

'The optimization of the existing factory capacity and the agreed assembly of the Porsche Cayenne in Osnabrück underlines the high degree of flexibility within the VW Group production network and it demonstrates the good cooperation between Volkswagen and Porsche. The team in Osnabrück deserves this great product," said Thomas Ulbrich, Board of Management member for Production and Logistics at Volkswagen Passenger Cars.

Obviously, this decision is good news for Volkswagen Osnabrück employees as well, since production of the Boxster and Cayman will be gradually shifted back to Zuffenhausen by the end of 2016.

'The employees in Osnabrück have proven with their many years of experience in sports car production that they deliver the highest quality Porsche. We appreciate the opportunity to trust them with a part of the final assembly of the Cayenne. This is an important contribution to achieving the strategy objectives Porsche in 2018," said Dr. Oliver Blume, head of production and logistics at Porsche AG.
