Porsche Macan SUV will get four-cylinder petrol engine by end of 2014

The Porsche Macan will be offered with a four-cylinder petrol engine by the end of 2014, Porsche engineers have confirmed, ending speculation about when the new downsized engine will arrive.

Speaking about the new engine Dr Thomas Casper, manager of transmission and drivetrain development said: 'I can't tell you the exact month, but sometime in 2014, perhaps at the end."

Although a 2.0-litre TDI unit from the VW Group could always be installed, Casper confirmed that Porsche isn't developing its own four-cylinder diesel engine, only a petrol, expected to be turbocharged, 2.0-litre, with horizontally opposed pistons. Casper admitted the sound the engine makes is a 'top priority," but promised the four-cylinder Macan will still be a 'proper Porsche".

The new engine is expected to be closely-related to the four-cylinder direct-injection petrol engine fitted to Porsche's new hybrid LMP1 prototype, set to compete at Le Mans in 2014.

The new model will slot in below the three-launch models, which include a 335bhp 3.0 V6 bi-turbo in the Macan S, a 254bhp 3.0 V6 turbodiesel in the Macan S Diesel and a 394bhp 3.6 V6 bi-turbo in the range-topping Macan Turbo.

It is therefore expected to produce less than 300bhp but improve significantly on the Macan S's economy figures of 32.5mpg and 204g/km.

In time this four-cylinder engine is expected to be fitted to the Boxster and Cayman, too, offering a new more affordable entry-point to Porsche ownership. A four-cylinder Boxster could start from around £35,000, while the Macan fitted with the new engine is expected to have a starting price of £40,000.
