The BRDC website still has his name on their homepage, in their 'gold star' roll of honour, alongside Lewis Hamilton. That's how highly rated he was.

http://www.brdc.co.uk/

On Sean's own website he talks about the one-to-one driver instruction he gave, he seemed to enjoy it.

Don't want to get too morbid but his FB page says a lot about the man - he loved life and loved motor racing.

https://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/seanedwards.eu?fref=ts

RIP

Sad news indeed.

Presumably just an inoccuous track day tuition session, with tragic results.

It sounded more like a test session / driver coaching for a race team owned by the family of the driver. The car was a Cup car & one report I read said it hit the wall at 210kph, which sounds more like brake failure or something else mechanical going badly wrong.

This is horrible to hear. What must the family be feeling at this time. Condolances to them.

Sean would post some of his race video's on rennlist and you would always get a nice response if you asked a few questions. Such a shame and such a waste. What happened will no doubt come out in the fullness of time but from the condition of the car i woud struggle believe it was race saftey standard.

Incredibly shocking news, Sean was a joy to watch at the wheel of a 911.

As others have said, condolences to his family and friends. I feel quite numb at the moment, what they must be feeling doesn't bear thinking about.

RIP Sean.

Chris Harris on racing with Sean Edwards and what motorsport will miss without him

Chris Harris wrote:
We were in the team truck at Hockenheim, it was the final race of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland 2010. My team mates for this one-off drive were Sean Edwards and Sascha Maassen. The race engineer opened his laptop and showed me a trace of my fastest lap overlaid with Sascha's. It wasn't quite the horror story I'd expected, so I reclined in the chair a little and allowed myself an inward smile. But before I could lean back too far, said engineer's face winced a little and he asked if I wanted to see my lap overlaid with Sean's fastest from that last session.

Remember Uncle Monty's lament in Withnail and I about never playing The Dane? The aching sense of learning something fundamental about your own limitations? Well, those two squiggly lines defined the difference between the handy journeyman and the real racer. Sean was doing things with his 997 Cup car that I simply couldn't understand.
Sean always did things with racing cars I couldn't quite comprehend, and now he is gone and I'll never have the chance to watch his talent grow and vicariously enjoy the many successes that he was surely going to achieve. That makes me sad and angry.

We became good friends after that weekend. Sean was gracious with his knowledge and I greatly admired his approach to professional motorsport: he was there to do a job and winning was all that mattered, but he did so with a wry cynicism for much of the nonsense that went on around him. He was always smiling, desperate to take the piss at any opportunity and more than happy to laugh when the joke was fired back at him.

I don't think being Sean Edwards, son of an F1 driver, was an especially easy thing. As with all racer's offspring, there always lurked the suspicion that privilege had outbid talent, and for all his successes I think Sean's greatest was that he proved himself in the toughest one-make formula of them all, the Porsche Supercup. There was no hiding, a famous name wouldn't find those precious tenths, and he very quickly rose to the top of a very talented bunch of drivers. That foundation was just beginning to generate the recognition it deserved. This year he won the Nurburgring 24 Hours at the age of 26. That's just an outstanding achievement.
Two years ago at Spa we were both doing some instructing and shared a room. Such was his maturity and experience in the race arena, it was very easy to forget that he was a young lad beginning an adult life outside of racing. One night we watched The Inbetweeners for hours, until tears were streaming down our faces and we couldn't laugh any more, and we talked about his plans for the future. Some of these centred around his thoughts on coaching people from the passenger seat which now have a terrible resonance in light of this morning's news.

A few weeks ago I met him in Monaco for a drink. I had a couple of hours free and thought, why not go and visit Sean, I haven't seen him for a while? I'm so glad I did. He was in his prime - supremely gifted in his chosen field and even though the sense of a life unfairly curtailed makes me both angry and sad, I want to remember him sitting in the sunshine casually telling me what it was like to be the first bloke to drive a Porsche Cup car flat through Eau Rouge.
Like so many of these young guns, Sean experienced and achieved more in his short time on this planet than most of us will in a full lifetime. To those who knew or just admired him, I hope that is some small consolation.

My thoughts are with his family, girlfriend, close friends and the wider racing community.

Sean Edwards 1986-2013

Sean Edwards was also a fellow forum member and regular poster on 911uk.com during his active years when the site was involved in reporting on his Supercup activities.

Sean Edwards was also associated with the site in an official capacity as our preferred Driver Trainer for 3 years from 2008 through to 2010.

For those who were privileged enough to have been in his company for his Driver Training services, his race craft and ability to communicate Performance driving made him the best in the business. The are a lot of driver trainers out there, but the manner in which he was able to articulate 'performance driving' was 2nd to none.

For the many years that I drove my GT3, from a complete novice to becoming a confident track day driver, I learnt everything over a 3 year period with driving training from Sean Edwards. He was an exception teacher and even for one so young, it was clear that he had a driving gift, that was demonstrated by consistently winning races and class victories across the globe.

His debut in the Porsche Supercup series in 2008 was sensational, winning 2 races in his 1st season in what is one of the most competitive race series around, which he carried regularly through to the German Carrera Cup for many year.

Having raced in every top flight race series all over the world and 2013 had been his most successful year adding the Nurburgring 24 Hour race title in a Mercedes SLS this year to prove that he was more than just a Porsche specialist. As the series leader of this years Porsche Supercup championship he was also in 2nd place in the BRDC Gold Star drivers title, only just behind Lewis Hamilton.

Sean Edwards, the motorsport will miss you, may you rest in peace.

As a tribute to Sean Edwards, here is his onboard video from the 2011 Porsche World Cup at the Nordschleife in the driving rain, doing what he did best.

Very sad, I was only just talking about him in Rallyeman's Rush thread a couple of weeks ago (he was in the film playing his Dad, did some stunt driving and consultancy work on the racing scenes too)

Porsche described Sean Edwards as “one of the most popular and successful pilots” in its one-car race series.

A statement from the German car maker said: “This news has sparked immense regret at Porsche.”

Hartmut Kristen, Head of Motorsport at Porsche, added: “Our thoughts are with his family and we want to express our deepest condolences to his relatives.”

also

Nico Rosberg
"sad period in the racing world due to the loss of maria de vilota and sean edwards whom i went to school with "

Mark Webber
"Way way too early...
What a talent.. Always enjoyed watching him drive at the F1 weekends."

also

"Mr Edwards' family and his girlfriend Laura have not yet commented on his death.

Mr Edwards' Twitter page suggests he became engaged in the summer - Laura posted a photo of a diamond ring on the social networking site next to the words: 'Thank you #diamonds #areagirls #bestfriend.'

Only a few days ago she tweeted Mr Edwards asking if he missed being at home."

How very sad for his young fiancé.
