Read up our detailed, in-depth article on the new Porsche 918 Spyder. This lightwieght machine has an infused hybrid engine that works with the V8 to produce 887bhp and a top speed of 211mph. Speed to transform you hair!

Revealed at this years Goodwood Festival of Speed, we were really excited to see the 918 Spyder bomb it's way up the Hill.

At TorqueAbout we discuss anything and everything motoring, or related likewise. We strive to give you, the public clear, in -depth information that is easy to read and contains only what you want to read.

Porsche 918 Spyder

Developing a car from scratch allowed Porsche to drastically adapt their current styling and create something insightful and innovative. The 918 Spyder made it's public debut at this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed, soaring up the famous Hill with a Hybrid Drivetrain thats offers up to 887mph@8,600/min. This can be achieved with a combination of the V8 engine (608hp), Hybrid Module (116 kW) & the Electric Motor (95kW).

At 1,640 kg (Weissach Package), the 918 is lighter than an Audi R8 and more powerful than a Koenigsegg CCX, so the speed is lightning. 0-62 mph takes just 2.8 seconds and the 918 will climb to a top speed of 211 mph. The Electric motor offers some benefits like 93 mph to reach top speed but the range is only 18 miles. So you'll will find the fuel drops faster than normal on longer journeys.

Porsche Essance

Moving on, the 918 Spyder embraces the Porsche essence with everyday versatility, maximum performance with minimum consumption. The team behind the 918 had the difficult job of developing a car suited for the next decade with a highly efficient and powerful hybrid drive. Porsche have always had the ambition to make simple and affordable super cars, however this particular model comes with a price; 781,155 Euro. Yes, rather a lot. Due to to be in mass production this September, the 918 Spyder will very rare and limited edition.

Hybrid Drive and Driving Dynamics

A key message of the 918 Spyder is that the hybrid drive from Porsche is a plus for no-compromise driving dynamics. Drivers can experience this thanks to the unique all-wheel drive concept with a combination of combustion engine and electric motor on the rear axle and the second electric motor on the front axle.

The 918 Spyder is capable of breaking records, says Porsche. A track called Nurburgring, which i'm sure you've heard of, is where all major manufacturers test their vehicles based entirely on racing ability. You could argue that it's addictive. Moving on, the current lap time for the 918 Spyder is 7.14 minutes, this makes it approximately 20 seconds faster than the Porsche Carrera GT.

Lightweight Design and Low Centre of Gravity

The design of the 918 Spyder has been taken straight out from motor racing. Creating the lowest centre of gravity so it will turn corners faster and maintain balance. The entire load-bearing structure is made of carbon fibre reinforced polymer for extreme torsional rigidity. There are additional crash elements at the front and rear that reduce energy in a collision. The drivetrain components, which weigh at 50kg, are located as low and centrally as possible in the vehicle.

Porsche Active Aerodynamic (PAA) for Different Driving Modes

Porsche Active Aerodynamic (PAA), a system of adjustable aerodynamic elements, ensures unique and variable aerodynamics.

In 'Race" mode, the retractable rear wing is set to a steep angle to generate high downforce at the rear axle. The spoiler positioned between the two wing supports near the trailing edge of the airflow also extends. In addition, two adjustable air flaps are opened in the underfloor in front of the front axle, and they direct a portion of the air into the diffuser channels of the underbody structure. This also produces a 'ground effect' at the front axle.

In 'Sport" mode, the aerodynamic control system reduces the attack angle of the rear wing, which enables a higher top speed. The spoiler remains extended. The aerodynamic flaps in the underfloor area close, which also reduces aerodynamic drag and increases attainable vehicle speeds.

In 'E-Power" mode, the control is configured entirely for low aerodynamic drag; the rear wing and spoiler are retracted and the underfloor flaps are closed. Adjustable air inlets under the main headlights complete the adaptive aerodynamic system.

When the vehicle is stationary or in 'Race" and 'Sport" mode, they are opened for maximum cooling air intake. In 'E-Power" and 'Hybrid" modes, they close immediately after the car is driven off in order to keep aerodynamic drag to a minimum. They are not opened until the car reaches speeds of approximately 130 km/h or when cooling requirements are higher.

The 'Weissach" Package

These modified super sports cars are recognisable by visual carbon on the spoiler, roof, rear-view mirrors and frames of the windscreen. Sections of the interior are upholstered with Alcantara instead of leather. Sound insulation has been reduced. Very lightweight magnesium wheels reduces the gross weight by 35kg. The overall benefits are improved dynamic performance. This does come with a price; 853,155 Euro, 72,000 more than the standard 918 Sypder.
