The amazing Porsche 918 looks set to start a brand new chapter in the world of supercar performance when it goes on sale in 2013. Porsche is planning to build just 918 of the mega-fast hybrid, and buyers will have to find £650,000 to get into one. The 918 marks the arrival of a new breed of supercars that not only deliver stunning performance, but also exceptional economy.

The 918 uses both a mid-mounted 4.6-litre V8 engine producing 562bhp and a trio of electric motors to deliver a sub-3 second 0-62mph time, a claimed 202mph top speed and yet an average of 94mpg in the official EU fuel test.

Naturally, we were keen to find out more, so when Porsche offered evo a chance for a very early ride in a development car, we jumped at the chance. You can read the full story in issue 169 of EVO MAGAZINE, on sale 28th March. But to give you a taster of what to expect here's a short video of evo's editorial director and founder Harry Metcalfe giving us a quick tour around the only fully working development car.

Interesting. Brilliant fuel economy for that kind of performance!

Quite expensive though.

The 918 Spyder is a mid-engined two seater sports car, designed by Michael Mauer,[5] that is powered by a 3.4 liter V8 engine (500 hp/370 kW) which is a development of the engine used in the RS Spyder Le Mans Prototype racing car. This is supplemented by three electric motors delivering an additional 218 horsepower (163 kW). The transmission is a 7-speed gearbox coupled to Porsche's own (PDK) double clutch system delivering power to the rear axle. Two electric motors drive the front wheels directly through a fixed ratio while a third electric motor is connected to the transmission and gives additional power to the rear wheels. This gives the 918 Spyder a 0–100 km/h time in just under 3.2 seconds and a top speed of over 320 kilometres per hour (200 mph). The energy storage system is a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery positioned behind the passenger cell. In addition to the plug-in recharge the batteries can also be charged by regenerative braking and by excess output from the engine when the car is coasting. CO2 emissions are 70 g/km and fuel consumption is 3 L/100 km (94 imperial mpg/78 us mpg). The 918 Spyder offers 4 different running modes: E-Drive allows the car to run under battery power alone, using the rear electric motor only, giving a range of 16 miles (26 km). Three hybrid modes (Hybrid, Sport and Race) use both the engine and electric motors to provide the desired levels of economy and performance. In Race mode a push-to-pass button is available to deliver additional electrical power.[6]

The chassis is a carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic monocoque. Magnesium and aluminium are extensively used in the construction of the car which helps keep the 918 Spyder's weight down to 1,490 kilograms (3,300 lb).

On July 28, 2010, after 2000 declarations of interest, the Supervisory Board of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, gave the green light for series development of the Porsche 918 Spyder.[7] The 918 will be produced in a limited series. It will be developed in Weissach and assembled in Zuffenhausen.

The weight under 1500 kg was the story when the concept car was revealed. The production car will be much heavier.

It has the 918 Spyder new tech specs (not the ones from the 2010 concept car) compared to 997 GT2 RS, Carrera GT, 996 GT1 Street, 993 GT1 Street and 959 Sport. 918 is amazing, but performance is very close to anything else that has already been done during the last 25 years.

And it is by far the heaviest Porsche super car yet, assuring a super car has to be a heavy machine (Veyron showing the way here - another Porsche family engineering product, despite many people don't know the story behind).

The thing with the weight was the same when the Carrera GT concept car was introduced. They claimed it will be 1250 kg, but the production car weighed 1380 kg.

This new episode of Wide Open Throttle sees Motor Trend's European Editor, Paul Horrell, heading over to Italy's Nardo test track to check out Porsche's 918 Spyder prototype. He also chats to the company's Head of Research and Development, Wolfgang Hatz.

Utilizing a mid-mounted 4.6-litre V8 engine and a trio of electric motors, the 918 Spyder has an elephantine 574 kW (770 hp) at its disposal, allowing a 0-100 km/h (62 mph) of less than three seconds and a 326 km/h (202 mph) top speed.
