Porsche is set to ramp up the already potent power output, crushing in-gear performance and overall economy of the 911 Turbo through the adoption of a new tri-turbo system for its existing 3.8-litre, horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine.

The firm plans to replace the twin-turbo set-up of today's 911 Turbo with a complex triple-turbo induction process similar to that employed by BMW M's new six-cylinder diesel-powered M550d xDrive and X6 xDrive50d models.

Porsche's new system is undergoing its final phase of development in the back of engineering prototypes of the new top-of-the-line 991.

As revealed in a series of recent patent applications made by the German car maker, the Porsche system uses three individual turbochargers. One smaller unit is mounted close to the engine to boost low-end response together with two larger ones similar to the Borg Warner units in use today.

As well as increasing overall power and providing a more linear delivery at the lower end of the rev range, the new induction process is also claimed to improve efficiency "” something well placed Weissach sources suggest will bring about significant fuel savings.

Details remain scarce, but power for the new 911 Turbo, the coupé version of which is due out early next year, looks set to climb from 495bhp to somewhere in the region of 525bhp "” or the same as that of today's 911 Turbo S. At the same time, combined average fuel economy and CO2 emissions are expected to beat the existing model's 24.4mpg and 272g/km.

As well as appearing in the 911 Turbo, the new tri-turbo system is also earmarked for the next-generation 911 GT2 and the successor to the GT2 RS.

991 911 turbo to have 3 !

3 turbos that is ! a complex tri turbo induction set up , , ,
just having a read of this weeks autocar & a few lines on the 991 turbo version having a small third turbo closer to the engine for low end response .
where will it all end ?

I know 530hp has already been hinted at and with the improved dynamics and reduced weight etc it will be a step on from the outgoing model, but I'd really like to see them to up the game with a big hike to something like 620 as seen in the current gt2 rs...

I don't quite see how they will make three turbos work on this. It isn't as if the existing two are far away from the engine. I could imagine four for a pair of small and large on each bank, but how would three work unless one is only connected to one bank of cylinders?

Maybe the third is for reverse! :coat:

A quick google found this:

The newest engineering masterpiece from BMW is the tri-turbo engine. That's right, an engine with three turbos. How does this work? Well, the first two will be rather conventional since they will run off exhaust gasses, but the third will be an electric turbo.

So maybe the answer is an electric driven third "turbo", only by definition then I wouldn't think you could call that a turbo at all :dont know:

Sounds better than calling it a hair-dryer though... :floor:

I thought this story was a plant from Porsche, to route out a mole
seems Autocar took the bait

anyway here are some more spy shots, note the rear hips of this 991TT / 991 TTT

So basically the triple turbo engine works by using two conventional turbochargers, and another device which isn't a turbocharger. So that's kinda more like a twin turbo setup then.
I guess I could say my 911 turbo has 8 cylinders, 6 of the are conventional cylinders, the other two are turbochargers.
AFAIK you can't have an electric turbo, a turbo is driven by exhaust gases. Dream up a new name for it.
