Apologies if this has been asked before but does anybody know why the new model has the number 991 as opposed to 998/999 for example? Just wondering

After five decades of continuous sportscar development the 991 is only the third clean-sheet 911, and Porsche were understandably very protective.

Porsche originally intended to use 998, but the totally new design needed to be kept secret until very near the reveal, and they did not want to alert the potential and eventual suppliers who were prototyping and developing the components.

As far as they were concerned, at the earliest stages, they were developing parts for an additional (anonymised) model called the "991".

998 and 999 are models of Ducati's sportsbikes and maybe this had something to do with Porsches decision.
