Agreed. And I have no need to find the limit of my Golf. It has other limits, e.g. 30 cases of wine.

Interested in either as a nice birthday present to myself. I'll also need to give the car a thoroughly good thrashing after my gearbox rebuild Thumb

I have no idea how to drive a 993 properly.

If one of you want to kick of a North Weald thread, I'm in (date dependent!)
I'll let you know what I hear back from them on my original request.

Hi All

Thanks Rob for the email - I am currently on holiday, returning to the office on 19 December.

I've only got intermittent access to a computer and so will come up with a full response to your suggestion for the Gymkhana training day then, if that's ok.

This group event was launched in October in response to demand from our clients who have enjoyed the activity at the end of our car club days. It is extremely popular with a waiting list for 2012 events. I'm sure you will all enjoy it and learn great skills from the day.

http://catdrivertraining.co.uk/index.php/cat-driver-training-courses/groups-a-corporate/car-clubs-a-forums/gymkhana-event.html

Weekends have been the preference for running this event, but weekdays can also be looked at.

Speak with you Rob with the detail in a couple of weeks.

Kind regards
Jo

I'm up for a 993 specific day..... I've had training from Andy in my scoobie at North Weald back in the day, it was great fun, but not what I'd want for the 993. Have also owned, trained and tracked a Caterham in the past. Again, cracking fun, but the balance is soooo different to the 993 that I'd question it's value to me.....

Defo up for rear-engine-biased driver training though

Thumb

thumbsup Right then Guys:

My understanding is as follows for CAT Driver Day using our Pork:

1. Cameron (cambjones) CAT Day PORK Only
2. Tom (tmilligan) CAT Day PORK Only
3. Darren (diddy_p) CAT Dat PORK only
4. Rob (RobIpswichUK) CAT Day PORK Only
5. Kim Hollamby CAT Day PORK Only
6. 911uk (911uk) CAT Day Only
7. Tony (Clinchy) CAT Day PORK Only
8. Sam - Cyruspower (meow day) CAT Day PORK Only
9. Andy (andyp) CAT Day
10. Rogttr CAT Day PORK Only
11. Andy. (Madalaa) Pork only CAT day

Now that Jo from CAT Driver Training is back from her (well deserved) holidays, she's recommended the following for us (having read through the thread) and taken into account our thoughts:

The group training day that will tick all members boxes is the Performance Driver ‘Track’ Day – this is the one you have read about on the GTROC and that they have greatly enjoyed, as have all the other forums we work with. The total number of trainees that can take part in this day is 6, the minimum 3. The overview on what is involved is below, but your day will specifically:-

• Look at the skills involved in driving rear engine cars and the differences in straight line braking and trail braking to improve turn in
• Look at the braking characteristics of your cars and how to optimize them
• Explore bump and compliance steer and the unique feel of 911’s at speed
• Explore the aerodynamic characteristics on the High Speed Bowl, showing how your cars get more stable as you go faster, as the aerodynamic centre of pressure moves forward (this is a unique 911 characteristic)
• Explore the subtleties in driving a rear engine car at speed on circuit

An action-packed day run by CAT Driver Training Ltd at Millbrook Proving Ground.

CAT Driver Training is run by Colin and Jo Hoad. Colin used to work for a leading motor manufacturer in the UK as a Vehicle Evaluator and Driver Trainer and has gained extensive experience and qualifications in driver instruction. This includes being certificated to instruct at Millbrook. His life has been spent working with his passion: motor cars - from racing minis to the race preparation of performance cars. He has much experience of vehicles on both road and track and brings a very different approach to driver enjoyment.

The day is a fast moving experience for 6 owners and their cars to introduce the secrets of performance driving. It is designed to be informative, exciting and fun. The group size is purposefully kept small so that the maximum can be obtained from the day in a highly personalised environment.

There is access to the 5 unique circuits at the renowned Millbrook Proving Ground, a venue that is not normally accessible for ‘track days’ and the general public.

Activities designed for the different circuits are:
• Learn ‘threshold’ braking from 100+mph on the ‘Mile Straight’
• High speed driving, potentially to the maximum of your car, on the banked circuit of the ‘High Speed Circuit’
• Drive the demanding ‘Alpine Route’ circuit with its hills, and variety of corners from hairpins to long and sweeping
• Take on the tight, twisty and challenging ‘Handling Circuit’
• Put a car through its paces on the wide open spaces of the ‘Steering Pad/Mile Straight Apron’

An instructor will accompany you on all the circuits during your session, and the objective is to teach you how to get the best from your car and develop your performance driving skills in a controlled environment and at a pace you are comfortable with.

Short presentations in vehicle dynamics will help you to understand the relationship between driver input and vehicle balance and control. From this comes the appreciation of how to safely drive your vehicle at ‘grip limit’ within the controlled confines of a track environment.

At the end of the day, your new found skills can be put to the test in a timed ‘shoot out’ around a gymkhana-style course laid out on the ‘Steering Pad/Mile Straight Apron’. This will be conducted in one of CAT Driver Training’s track prepared cars (normally a Subaru Impreza or a Caterham 7).

Included in the day are:
• Professional in car tuition
• Access to 5 unique circuits at Millbrook Proving Ground
• Lunch and refreshments during the day
• Timed end of day ‘shoot out’ in one of CAT’s track prepared cars
• Full emergency services on hand all day
• 1 hour 40 minutes driving time with your personal instructor

Performance Driver ‘Track’ Day Schedule

08:30 – 09:15 Coffee, Introduction, Licence Check, Scrutineering, Safety Briefing & Objectives of the Day
09:15 – 09:20 Drive to Circuits
09:20 – 10:20 Mile Straight
10:20 – 11:30 High Speed Circuit
11:30 – 12:45 Handling Circuit
12:45 – 13:30 Lunch
13:30 – 14:40 Alpine Route
14:40 – 15:10 Understeer/Oversteer
15:10 – 15:50 Gymkhana timed ‘Shoot Out’ – Steering Pad/Mile Straight Apron
16:00 Presentation & Debrief
Any Questions
End

Timings & Circuit order may be subject to change on the day depending on circuit activity

Note on noise limits ... to quote me "there is no limit unless you are a Le Mans Prototype or an F1 car". If anyone thinks they can compete at that level on noise, be sure to mention it when booking!

There is a maximum of 6 people per day (minimum of 3), so we're gonna need at least two days.

Pricing is as follows:
3 participating members = £425 pp
4 participating members = £399 pp
6 participating members = £370 pp

All prices include VAT at the current rate and payment must be made at the point of booking to confirm individuals places.

The earliest a 6 person event could take place is mid February onwards due to the daylight hours needed. Weekends are usually the favourites for these days but weekdays are also possible.

OK Then.
Are we all still in?
Who can make weekdays?
Who can only make weekends?

On the basis of your replies, I'll endeavour to try to get two groups with days close together (week apart for weekends) or hopefully a Friday/Saturday and go from there.

Thank you for all the efforts so far... sounds like a great day.

I'd love to join and am pretty flexible about whether its a weekday or weekend. I'd happily take a day off work to do a weekday if that suited people. Or book a day of me time with the home diary authorities on a weekend if that's the way we go.

Agree that daylight is important! February might still be a touch early I'd think, especially if we stumbled upon a dull day...
