Inside Porsche Racing
So what is it all about?
The PDA has taken on a new look for 2010. Alongside the Porsche 924's which have successfully run as a one make Championship for nearly 20 years, other Porsche models have now been introduced into the Championship, which has been renamed the "BRSCC Porsche Championship". There are now classes for the Porsche 924, the Porsche Boxster S and an Invitation Class.
Drivers in every class are eligible to score points for the overall championship as well as points for their individual class.
The tightly controlled Rules and Regulations are aimed at keeping costs under control so that this form of motor racing can be open to all. There is a mix of ages in the series from teenagers to "grey hairs" all mixing well in a really friendly and welcoming paddock atmosphere.
PORSCHE 924 (2.0 LITRE NATURALLY ASPIRATED)
The former 'Porsche 924 Championship' now runs as a separate class within the 'BRSCC Porsche Championship'.
The Porsche 924 is a great first step on the racing ladder, and many drivers have moved on to success in other series having learned their race craft in the highly competitive world of 924 racing. It is also attractive to the more experienced racer, providing close action with the emphasis on driver skill rather than outright power. The Porsche 924 is a low cost route into Porsche racing using standard cars with minor modifications to improve performance. The rules permit an easily achievable power limit which discourages cheque book engine tuning, ensuring that the winner is not simply the driver with the largest budget.
For 2010 the 924's will continue to use the Toyo Proxes R888 as its "control" tyre. This is a full race tyre which resulted in dramatically improved lap times when it was first introduced to the championship. Anyone used to track driving on normal road tyres will be astounded by the grip developed by the Porsche 924 on these tyres.
The Porsche 924 Class in the Championship will continue to produce close, exciting racing for both experienced and novice drivers alike.
PORSCHE BOXSTER S (3.2 LITRE)
From 2010, Porsche Boxsters will run as a separate class within the BRSCC Porsche Championship. The eligible cars will be Porsche Boxster S, 3.2 litre, 986 and 987 models.
The Porsche Boxster is a well balanced mid-engined roadster with good innate handling characteristics. Stiffened and lowered, it makes a wonderfully handling, agile race car. The new race series is for the 3.2 litre "S" version of the Porsche Boxster, which adds significant power to an inherently well balanced chassis. With up to 280 BHP and top speeds in excess of 170 mph, Porsche Boxster racing will be one of the fastest and most powerful Championships in the UK.
The regulations will be very tightly controlled to ensure that the cars on the grid are as evenly matched as possible. At the same time all, the correct racing parts will be added to ensure that the cars are real race cars which will be exciting to drive and race without being excessively fragile. Extreme modification will not be permitted, so that the cars will be equal in power and weight providing exciting, cost effective motorsport.
Some components will be "control" items whose specification is set out in the championship regulations.
The organisers can supply a kit of "control" parts that will enable competitors to convert a road going Porsche Boxster into an eligible championship race car. The kit will include the roll cage, upgraded suspension components, brake pads, racing wheels and tyres.
The kits are now available at a cost of £3,297.90 plus VAT, which includes a set of Toyo Tyres. Using the increased purchasing power of the whole championship it has been possible to provide other items such as Fire Systems, Seats, Safety Harnesses, Data and Video logging systems at a substantially lower price than would be available to individual competitors.
INVITATION CLASS
The invitation class will be open to any normally aspirated Porsche up to 3.0 litres capacity and turbocharged cars up to 2.0 litres. Cars competing in the invitation class will be required to use Toyo tyres but there will be no restrictions on sizes. The rules for the invitation class will be kept very simple to allow the widest range of cars possible to compete.
AIMS OF THE PDA
2010 is the inaugural year of the 'BRSCC Porsche Championship', but the 19th consecutive year of Porsche 924 racing in the UK.
Formerly the 'Porsche 924 Championship', we have now expanded the series by introducing two additional classes in the form of Porsche Boxsters and an Invitation Class to race alongside the classic 924's, ensuring packed grids and close, exciting racing for years to come.
The aim remains the same; to provide cost effective and enjoyable Porsche racing.
The Championship is designed to be a suitable series for both novice and experienced drivers, and now with the additional classes, also provides the opportunity for driver progression.
Importantly, the regulations level the playing field leaving the emphasis on the skill of the driver not on the size of the budget.
There is a mix of ages in the series, from teenagers to "grey hairs" all mixing well in a really friendly and welcoming series. Highly competitive it may be, but there is a real camaraderie amongst the drivers with what goes on in the paddock being almost as important as what happens on the track.

THE BRITISH RACING & SPORTS CAR CLUB
The BRSCC organises and runs the Porsche Championship for the PDA.
Formed in 1946 it has been one of the most influential clubs and main driving forces in domestic motor racing ever since.
Today, with over 40 race meetings and 20 championships under the BRSCC umbrella annually, the Club continues to play a leading role in the British motor racing scene, organising both club race meetings and FIA sanctioned international events.
The Club Head Office is in Borough Green, Kent, just a short drive from Brands Hatch. With support from six regional Centres, the Club runs race meetings at circuits across the UK and is well equipped to serve members wherever they live in the country.
While the Club is very much forward thinking, they are proud of their history, so are honoured to number amongst their Vice Presidents such racing legends as Sir Jack Brabham OBE, Sir Stirling Moss OBE, Derek Bell MBE and Nigel Mansell OBE who all raced extensively with the BRSCC.
