Hi, I'm getting rid of my Audi TT and going for a 2006 Cayman 3.4 S.

I have seen a few but no nothing about what to look for mechanically.

What are the common things to watch out for and how do I check bearing in mind it is mid-engined and hidden away.

Any pointers please?

Hi,

Not sure what specific items to look at with this model but getting a PPI is essential and following that an OPC or repsected Indy Warranty.

Good luck

I fully agree with PGN - a PPI is definitely recommended in my opinion. I bought a 2006 Cayman 3.4S a month ago. The inspection found just a couple of relatively minor faults and so I purchased the car. It was a private purchase but had a transferable warranty with it, so that was a bonus. I had a major service carried out immediately by the same specialist who performed the PPI (NineMeister of Warrington) and had the faults fixed at the same time. If you are near Warrington I would definitely recommend NineMeister.

Maybe I could have done without the PPI you might ask? No way in my opinion:- Before I decided to look for the Cayman S, I was looking for a 993 for some weeks, I had a 993 inspected with a view to purchasing it. It was on sale at a garage (not a Porsche specialist) that sold quality marques - Porsche, Merc, etc. The PPI revealed 20 mechanical faults (estimate £6k to repair) and a dodgy paint job (£2k to put right). The car looked really smart - to the untrained eye, e.g. mine; but in reality it was a shed.

Also, I had a 'Porsche Experience' session in the 997 and the Cayman S at Porsche in Silverstone. That was when I decided to look for a Cayman, newer technology, etc... and I found it to be a great car on the day.

Personally, I would never invest >£20k in a car without having it inspected beforehand. I will probably keep the car for 3 years so the PPI will have cost me about 50p a week over that time.

By the way, I have not been disappointed with the Cayman, I think it is a great car. Hope you find a good one.

Hi there, I bought my 2006 registered Cayman 2.7 in May 2010 from Nottingham Porsche Centre. They prepared the car to a very high standard, which included a major service, new front discs and pads, brake fluid and spark plugs and a new set of rubber. Whatever you decide to buy, always ensure you take out the porsche Extended Warranty, which also included Porsche Assist recovery service. Also make sure you have a full service history and that all recommended service requirements have been met. Without this you could have problems getting things fixed under any extended warranty and a future prospective buyer may well be put off without complete documentation. I would only buy from a private source if you havd complete confidence in the seller and the validity of all the car details. To date my car has exceeded my expectations and is a great car to drive.
