Pirelli Sotto Zero for year round use?

Having had some slippy moments in the snow over Xmas, and a bit of aquaplaning on the motorway during "summer" :dont know: I have seen Pirelli Sotto Zero winter tyres mentioned a few places.

What's the downside of using these tyres more regularly through the year?

No track days (if I do then likely put on the OEM tyres), lots of motorway style driving....and crappy English weather...

Winter tyres are great for temperatures below 7 degrees and grip is improved significantly by using them from about November to about March time. They have more silica and sipes (little cuts) which makes them softer and grip better especially on damp and wet roads. As temperatures increase, they will wear very quickly and they also tend to be noisier. In warm weather you will find the steering less direct and precise due to increased movement of the tread blocks. They will provide less gri[p in the dry and warm weather than regular summer tyres. Also to be effective, they are considered word by the time they reach 4mm so if you use them all year round, you will find that by the time you reach next winter, they will be well worn.
