I am new on this forum and new to Porsche-owning (not driving) and plan to do much of the work on my newly acquired 1984 3.2 Carrera myself, as I do on my other old cars and bikes. Before setting the car away for the winter I plan to do an oil change and just want to make sure I am not doing anything wrong. The owner’s manual is 500 km away so I ask here before proceeding.

Servicing a dry sump is new to me on cars, but I hope it is as easy as this:
1. Loosen engine drain plug
2. Loosen oil tank drain plug
3. Be flooded with ca 10 l hot oil while fiddling with the oil filter
4. Accept that the remaining 2-3 l of oil will remain in the system
5. Reinstall drain plugs and filter and fill oil tank
6. Start engine and hope that the oil gets to where its needed ASAP

Am I missing anything in this procedure?
Will the oil tank accept 10 l at a time or do I have to run the engine for it to gulp some oil halfway through the filling procedure?
What is the diameter of the drain plug washers?
I have oil and filter – do I need anything else?

Grateful for any advice!

Regards from snowy Oslo

Hi done mine a couple of times, you have it about right in my experience it will run through and take the whole lot of oil before you start it up think i put about 11 lts in by the time it had run warm and rechecked.

good luck Tim

I don't like the idea of the 2-3 litres left in the cooler and pipework either, but there doesn't seem to be any easy way around this, which is why I consider frequent changes a must.

When doing a change on my SC I remove the HT lead from the ignition coil and give the starter motor a couple of 10 second blasts with a good one-minute gap in between to allow it cool a little. That way you're guaranteed to get some oil in the sump before the engine is under any load and you don't have that nervous 5-10 seconds with the engine running and the pressure gauge sat at zero. I don't believe that can be any good for the shells with no oil pressure on them.

Don't forget (2 off) fresh sump plug seals too. You may be lucky and be able to reuse the ones you've got, but for the pennies they cost it's worth getting new ones. That way you don't have to over tighten the plugs to ensure a good seal and it makes the job a lot easier next time.

Don't overtighten your filter. Just a smear of old oil on the seal and make it hand tight then a fraction more. You should be able to remove by hand when you come to do the job again. Final piece of advice is to make sure your drain tray has enough capacity, not forgetting that you have to be able to move it afterwards too.

Good luck.
