Porsche Carrera Cup Great Britain 09 Race 9 & 10 Croft
Sutton heads Porsche Carrera Cup GB at Croft
The stage is set for two mighty contests in rounds nine and ten of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB after official testing at Croft today (Friday 12 June), with James Sutton topping the times at the North Yorkshire track.
But with just over a quarter of a second covering the top three times, it's going to be very close in Sunday's pair of races. Meanwhile, it was even closer in the pro-am1 category as Glynn Geddie headed Robert Lawson by one-thousandth of a second. Not to be out-done, the pro-am2 racers were also very closely matched as George Brewster headed Paul Hogarth by less than a fifth of a second.
Sutton (Red Line Racing) has always been very strong at Croft and in the afternoon test session he lapped seven-tenths of a second inside his two year-old lap record to head the time sheets. "I really like Croft," said Sutton. "I had two poles and two wins here in 2007," he added as he set the pace for locally-based Red Line Racing.
But snapping at Sutton's heels were Tim Bridgman (Team Parker Racing) and Tim Harvey (Red Line Racing), and they go into the race weekend with Harvey leading the title race by just two points from Bridgman. With a point on offer for both pole positions during Saturday's qualifying session, Bridgman will level the score with Harvey before racing starts if he is able to maintain his 100% pole position record in 2009.
Tom Bradshaw (Team Parker Racing) turned in a good performance to end the day fourth fastest, just ahead of the battling pro-am1 racers. Geddie (Team Parker Racing) and Lawson (JHR) were virtually inseparable, as Lawson prepares for his first Carrera Cup races at his home track.
Michael Caine (Motorbase Performance) ended the day seventh, but will surely be right in the battle for pole when it really matters on Saturday afternoon. Wrapping up the top ten times were pro-am1 contenders Derek Pierce (JHR) and Tony Gilham (Red Line Racing), who were split by Lewis Hopkins (Red Line Racing).
Brewster (Celtic Speed) made his 2009 Carrera Cup debut in style to head pro-am2, but Hogarth (IN2Racing) was right behind and with Bob Lyons (Celtic Speed) firmly in contention, the pro-am2 contest should be another highlight of the races.
After qualifying at 2.35pm on Saturday afternoon, both races are on Sunday, starting at 12.40pm and 4.25pm. Subject to TV scheduling, both races are likely to be broadcast live on ITV4 during the programme covering the BTCC action.
