997 - Wheel Bolts

Looking for opinions on the latest dilemma -If you are an obsessive, meticulous 997 owner you will have cast a critical eye over the naff wheelbolts at some time. Indeed you will also have seen articles regarding wire brush refurbishment and some fresh paint. However I spotted on a 911 specialist website, stainless steel replacements. Thinking this would be the answer to all my problems I ordered a set. They arrived last week and I have to say very nice looking pieces of engineering, I quickly whipped off one of the old ones to find that the new bolts are 7mm longer. So while not yet questioning the supplier why this is so, I did think I would call Porsche in the hope that I may get a tech to confirm that 7mm will make no difference thinking that the drillings would be well in excess of this into the hubs. Sadly and perhaps as expected I got a case of ...No Porsche cannot recommend any fitting of non supplied components esp NOT wheeelbolts - will invalidate warranty should there be any issues arising - When questioned why... the issue relates to heat causing bolt expansion and thereafter the rationale became less clear...

So the question is (short of me taking the wheels off and determining the thread depth) has anyone been here before and what are your thoughts on the matter ...dont say plastic covers !!

Also this refers to a C4S which does have different wheel sizes to S.

Thanks for your opinion

Went through the same thing. I have a set of bolts just sat here as I to have not fitted them. My reason being that they were heavier than the standard.

However, I understand from the PCGB forum that some members have had them replaced under warranty! Worth a punt.

My new bolts I have are slightly longer than the standard IIRC but not sure how long.

At some point in the future I am going to put Porsche 5mm spacers on my C2S and these require the 7mm longer bolts. May be a way forward for you to buy the spacers (which where much cheaper than the bolts) and use the new bolts if that's the way you want to go.

I will be buying official Porsche items for the warranty though.

Hi Rich, your telling me you could tell the weight difference from the heavier bolts :?: :dont know:

Wow

Nope, but the fact is the new bolts are twice a heavy. 90grams to 45grams IIRC so it can't be good. :)

I would just offset the weight by losing a few pounds

Edit: I meant me not you. You would struggle

So guys what is the best option ? I was thinking of taking mine out and treating them with something and make them new but not sure that that something might be.....

Wheelbolts ongoing

Guys,

Thanks for the response so far, so the idea regarding the spacers is valid and I could do this, hadn't really any intent to do that but it is a potential solution. The comments regarding the weight -HA never considered that as I was too preoccupied with the length issue...I will have to get out the Mrs, digital cooking scales and make a comparison later tonight to put things into perspective re the additional weight.

I think the official spacers are around 30GBP per axel set IIRC so not that much more than you would have already paid. Makes the alloys sit much nicer with the body and allegedly will offer some handling improvement. Not tried this yet so don't know for sure.

I saw a thread in the past months where someone had taken great care to treat them, prime and give multiple coats and got them to where they should be all the time. Will do a search.

Might look at that. :thumb:

Anyone want some DesignTek wheel bolts? With locking bolts too. :)

I think the whole cost of bolts/locking bolts and spacers was around 270GBP IIRC. My next job :)

Carnewal were the cheapest but with the Euro/pound change it may be beaten by OPC

Think these bolts cost me £220 about a year ago!! Dunno what I was thinking as not one of my most thought through buys I can tell you. :pc:

You paid about the right money but non Porsche, what were you thinking :?

Somebody will take them off your hands for sure
