Buying advice for a 911 virgin.....

I'm investigating the possibility of buying a 997 (Gen II) C2S or C4S Convertible in the next month or two and would welcome a little help and advice......

Ideally I would like to buy a used Gen II rather than new with a focus on 'value for money' - have you seen any for sale meeting these requirements of can you recommend delears/specialists?

I couldn't find that many available - I was advised that these were released around July 2008 - are more likely to hit the 2nd hand market soon?

I'm probably going to start 3rd world war by asking this question - whilst I enjoy driving fast and safely I'm in no way an 'expert' / professional. I was tempted by the C4S due to its perceived extra security provided by the 4WD - is my assumption correct or would a C2S be just as good?

Thank you in advance.....

But seriously,
The chassis of the 997 is so much better than the 996 that a C2S will be fine for most people,
the C4S is hardly worth the expense for most drivers

But 2nd hand cars aren't around in great numbers mainly due to the recent economic climate Porcshe sales are obviously down

Welcome!

The C2S is more fun to drive. I thought the C4S felt too planted. With the C2S it feels like its alive but is very safe, makes you feel like you are pushing it when in reality you are nowhere near the limit. You understand that fully if you do a half day at Millbrook putting it through its paces.

The value for money is a Gen1, there are hardly any Gen2's 2nd hand and I seem to remember that the ones at OPC's are all POA.

Unless you specifically wanted PDK save yourself a load of cash.

Let me know if you want sone finance figures.

I agree, there seems to be some great deals available on the Gen I models at the moment, so I could be tempted down that route :)

One thing that I didn't care for on the Gen I was that you had to insert a SIM card into the PCM2 module for phone capabilities - I'm familiar with the different approaches of 2 x SIM cards, etc, etc however I still don't like it.

Has anybody tried the TOOKIPOR module which apparently fits to your PCM2 module and provides BlueTooth capabilities, etc, etc - if this is any good I'd probably buy a Gen I :) :)

I think there's hardly any price difference between a new and used Gen II 997 at the moment.

Quick update, the deposit was paid yesterday

In the end I went for a 4S Cabriolet registered November 2006, so just over 2 years old - for me, this offered a nice balance between purchase price and age.

Should be delivered week beginning 23rd March so not long to wait :)

Specification:

- Carrera 4S Cabriolet
- Seal Grey Metallic
- Black Leather
- 19" Carrera Classic Wheels
- 6 CD Changer
- Cruise Control
- Heated Seats
- Navigation Module for PCM
- Park Assist
- Porsche Crest on Head Restraints
- Side Skirts
- Sports Seats
- Stainless Steel Tailpipes
- Telephone Module
- Wheel Centre Set
- Windscreen with Grey Top Tint

Not overly spec'd albeit quite a nice balance/selection - the only other extra I would have liked was Bose

Welcome aboard ... bet the next week doesn't go fast enough for you. And remember to post some pictures when you get your car

It all went horribly wrong on Tuesday......

I'd ordered my C4S Convertible (2yrs 4 mnths old) from an OPC (some distance from where I live) so thought I was in safe hands - minimum standards and all that sort of stuff.

To say I was excited on Tuesday morning was an understatement - the car was delivered on the lorry and looked great from a distance. When I looked a little closer I started to see more and more problems, some minor some not.

Minor problems in terms of badly detailed interior, broken wind deflector, worm carpet mats started to irritate however, when I spotted a paint run on the front bumper my irritation turned to anger.

Once I spot a problem I start to look even closer - the paint run then led to a misaligned bumper, to paint overspray/masking tape marks.

.....at best this was a poor respray to address stone chips, at worse accident repair damage.

Either way photos were taken and the car rejected - when faced with my anger and the photos my OPC accepted my rejection very quickly.

So now I'm in the process of returning the car and buying another from a different OPC centre, I'll keep my fingers and legs crossed that this time it works out better :?

Give the independents a chance
remember we spend our own money, and take more care than some OPC's, to them its just a job and they're spending someone elses money, so that would never happen with a reputable professional independent,

Sorry to hear that your first dealings with the OPC went horribly wrong but guess they only as good as the weakest link in the chain. From my limited dealings with various OPC's, personally I try to avoid them when I can.

AH9999 - sorry to hear of your woes, this is not a good way into 911 ownership. Glad you got your money back and now looking for a different 997. You could do far worse than to visit Mark's website - he was runner up in the recent 911uk polls for best Indie category.

Even the world of Porsche can have a string of dodgy dealings! Thats is def poor service, they must have been thinking their dealing with stevie wonder, an example like that must be alerted and notified before the dropoff, unless of course the price reflected the conditions?

Nonetheless dude, hope the next venture turns out a more successful one.

That's a shame..... :x

I have only dealt with one OPC (one used and one new 997) and they were faultless.

Maybe every cloud has a silver lining. There are a few more GenII cars around now (but not a lot!), so it might be worth waiting for the right one of those. Having just moved from GenI to GenII I can certainly say the difference is worth it, but largely because of the PDK.........
