What 3rd party warranty to use? Or are they all poor?!

Hi all,

I am looking at used 997s at present. I have been offered one that ticks the spec boxes and budget, but it is not from an OPC but from an Indy dealer (not one of the big Porker ones but a smaller prestige one). Now we all know the warranty is important, and this co. offers an MB&G warranty which is backed by AXA. I am told this is a total cover comprehensive cover policy etc etc. But whoever I talk to about how good this is I get different answers as you might exepct as follows:

* From the dealer offering the MB&G policy - "this is a total cover policy, they do pay out, do cover engine and gearbox and essentials just not genuine wear and tear". "The Porsche OPC warranty is 3rd party anyway! All are in the main so you just need a good one like MB&G".

* From OPC or Specialist Porsche Indies - "no other warranty policies are worth the paper they're written on. Only settle for an OPC or in-house warranty".

Does anyone have any advice please? I don't want to expose myself to poor cover and thus huge bills if something goes wrong ( :sad: )...however if this MB&G is what it says it is then it sounds good?! :dont know:

Hi,

The majority of 3rd party warranties aren't very good for Porsche. Some even specifically exclude them in them in the small print (eg. Tesco/Direct Line).

I've never heard of this specific one, but AXA are clearly well recognised. All I can suggest is you read the small print, you're specifically looking for:

a. Is your car included/excluded by name
b. What is the claim limit (an engine replacement is £10k)
c. What are the labour rates (Porsche are over £100 / hr)
d. Does is it state where the car has to be repaired?
e. What does it exclude?

Porsche warranty is underwritten by XL, but is also specifically created for PCGB.

Why don't you just buy a Porsche warranty?

If an OPC warranty is "the only thing to do" in peoples' opinions then I guess I'll go for that after the 90 day period and pay the £1500. I am new to Porsche ownership so just trying not to make any schoolboy errors!

Any other comments/opinions though anyone? And is buying from a smaller indie "prestige dealer" who sells all sorts of cars the wrong route? i.e. in saving $2-3k or so is the exposure high?

The thing you're protecting is the engine going bang and the reality is that they are a lot better since 2000. Lots of minor engine mods since the liquid cooled M96 engine were introduced in 1998, and they are a lot better now (esp. facelifted 997).

Personally, I would risk having no warranty until the 90 days is up and then go OPC route.

The supplying dealer would usually put a short term warranty on the car and even if they don't, you'll have recourse unless you specifically decline the warranty (and even then you'd have some room to go back under sales of goods act).

Failing all that, expect some good will from PCGB for a faulty engine, as long as the car has been serviced at an OPC according to schedule.

My advice would be check
maximum claim limit
maximum labour rate the co is prepared to pay

Iget the feeling that Porsche goodwill on a sub 6 year old car with main dealer history will give a decent contribution in a lot of cases. and its the older cars where you need to be protected

And off course get a ppi done before you buy
