More prototype for Porsche's next-generation Cayenne have been spotted testing in Germany in preparation for the SUV's eventual launch sometime in early 2010. As these latest spy shots confirm, Porsche's next Cayenne will be smaller than the current model although it will still share a common platform with the next-generation Volkswagen Touareg and Audi Q7, both of which aren't expected to change significantly in size compared with the current models.

The smaller size also agrees with Porsche's desire to create a much more hard-core performance SUV than the current Cayenne, which has been criticized for being bloated and cumbersome. Once again both V6 and V8 petrol engines will be on offer, but a new turbodiesel V6 and as well as a petrol-electric hybrid model to be shared with the upcoming Panamera sedan will be included in the new lineup.

Power levels will range from about 280bhp (208kW) from an entry-level V6 and could top out at close to 500bhp (373kW) in a twin-turbo V8 model. All engines will include Porsche's new direct-injection technology, and some could even be matched to the carmaker's new dual-clutch gearbox. Expect to see 0-60mph times of less than five seconds for top end models and top speeds in excess of 180mph.
