Hi All,
My very first post - so please dont bite!

I have been browsing this forum for the good part of 6 weeks now and figured this may be a useful topic for newbies to this forum and porsche, with the similar likes of me!

I am wondering if you guys could add some of the terms used when discussing the 911 and abbreviations used on this forum....

some of them (and i hope ive worked them out rights are as follows)...

OPC- Offical Porsche Center
TT - Triptonic
PSE - Porsche Sport Exhaust
PCM - Porsche Communication Management

Feel free to Add...

Cheers,
Afsar.

TT isn't Tiptronic, basically some people call the Turbo a TT, as in Twin Turbo, personally I call it a Turbo, after all that's what it's got written on it's bum :)

PASM - Porsche Active Suspension Management
PSM - Porsche Stability Management
LSD - Limited Slip Differential
ABD = Automatic Brake Differential
TC = Traction Control
RS = Renn Sport

and I'll leave PU for someone else to answer is no less than 1000 words !

easy.......polyurethane

we're all forgetting the most essential abrv.........especially when looking to buy one

PPI-pre-purchase inspection

and one for the water-cooled boys- :twisted:

RMS-rear main seal

DME = Digital Motor Electronics

Can anyone shed some light on what RMS please?

Rear Main Seal - It's the seal through which the crank exits the crankcase before the flywheel and then the clutch. It is prone to failure on the watercooled engines because of the movement afforded in the crank due to the distance between the seal and the last crank journal. It is not so prevalent in the Turbo and GT3 engines because the bottom end of these is based on an older and more expensive design/manufacturing solution.

See also, Intermediate shaft seal which is the seal on the shaft which drives the ancillary components, rather than put all of the load on the crank.

PCGB- Porsche Cars Great Britain, or Porsche Club Great Britain.
PCCB- Porsce Ceramic Composite Brake
PCM- Porsche Communication Module (1 or 2, 2 being a newer version. v1 no longer supported by Porsche for nav discs)
MAF (Dunno what it stands for, but its an airflow meter. When it conks out, your 996 runs funny)

OBC - On Board Computer
OEM - Original Equipment Manufacturer
HID - High Intensity Discharge

Struggling with all the Porsche acronyms & abbreviations

A silly question to ask perhaps but here goes anyway... As a new comer to this splendid site I must admit that I've really struggle with some the acronyms & abbreviations you old heads are constantly using (I have to trawl through some old posts to try and find out what some of them actualy stand for) :? !

PSM, PCM, OPC, PU, RMS, ISB, HID, VIL, MY, TSB, PET etc, etc to name but a few.

Is it possible to have some sort of guide or link put together for us new comers detailing all of them, as it can be quite annoying following a thread only to be stumped when someone uses one of these? :)

I'll have a stab at these for you

PSM - Porsche Stability Management System
PCM - Porsce Communications Management (Satnav)
OPC - Official Porsche Centre (Garage)
PU - PolyUrethane (Bumber)
RMS - Rear Main Seal (seal between gearbox and engine)
ISB - Intermediate Shaft Bearing
HID - High Intensity Discharge (Lights similar to xenon)
VIL - ?
MY - Model year (year car was built)
TSB - Trustees Savings Bank ;-)
PET - (its the system you order parts and get information off) no idea what the abbreviation is though

Rich H will be along soon to mark my work ;-)

Thanks lads.. I have to say that smj996c's reply on TSB had me in stitches! :floor:

OP - Original poster (ie originator of thread)
AFAIK - As far as I know
