Hi, I have an early non-varioram 993 Carrera. I have renewed the standard shock absorbers, front top mounts, wishbone bushes, roll bar drop links, steering arms etc and now I would like to take the car to somewhere that understands the ins and outs of a standard geometry set up. I have been to Paragon and do not wish to return. I used to own an Elise and it was only when I discovered Sinclaire of London that I discovered how it should behave. I really do not want to repeat the process of paying so called experts for incompetence before I stumble across the right people. Why, may you ask, have I gone for standard set up? Well, most specialist manufacturers like Lotus and Porsche do have just an inkling how to do these things and most of the time the modifications I have experienced,,,well..no matter how much I kid myself detract from the original set up (albeit a compromise). I also live in Sussex, the land of rubbish road surfaces. Hopefully someone out there knows a specialist who, like Sinclaire of London, will make my car behave like a 993 should. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Hi, Parr in Crawley it is then if no one else has any suggestions and thanks for the welcome.

Alternative

Tognola in Datchet has the equipment for four wheel alignment, had mine done there.

The 993 has a special rear suspension - it dynamicaly changes angles during operation and needs specialised setup - talk to Jonas at www.JZmachtech.com if they can't do it he will tell you who can.

You must *always* do a four-wheel alignment on a 993. Changes made at one end of the car alone will adversely affect the other axle.

Kinematic toe: an attribute of the 993 rear suspension which helps to stabilize the tail-happy tendency of a rear engine car. The toe value changes dynamically while driving, depending upon the forces acting on the car. This is a critical value, and the vast majority of garden-variety garages will have never heard of this parameter, let alone have the tools or knowledge to address it. Kinematic toe is your litmus test to identify these shops and take your alignment work elsewhere. The factory tools to set the kinematic toe are quite expensive; unless the garage does a lot of 993 alignments, they will *not* have the tools in-house.

After your alignment you should always get a printout of what the actual alignment settings are for your records.

Tognola have this

all around. i think you might find tognola offering this particular service the cheapest.

I can understand your approach. Any other suspension kit will decrease comfort over the standard set up.

However, Porsche also built in a fair degree of safety into the alignment and a place like JZM have setting which can make the handling characteristics more fun if that's required.

Thanks for all your input. Just been put on hold by a leaking rear main seal ..so...clutch etc. Also looks like new 'camber' control arms at the rear as the bushes are allowing noticeable movement and don't look too well. Am I right in assuming that there are no replacement bushes for these? I have already replaced the front bushes with polyflex. Quite easy and comparitively cheap. Anyway I appreciate your input, thanks.

Well, it's been a while but alignment done today. The firm I went to were helpful, efficient and above all knew what they were doing. I went to Tognola. Thoroughly recommended.
