996 Engine Rebuild?

I have a friend who has unfortunately blown the engine on his 996. This after 67,000 miles. He had a ratapping noise coming from the engine sounding like tappets and apparently having spoken to a couple og garages this seems to be a common problem. The end result is that the big ends have now gone and we are looking for either

A) A secondhand engine with some history

or

B) A trusted source who can rebuild my own engine.

The problem is this guy is not very mechanically minded, he states that he had a loud rattling sound. Car was lifted by the RAC to Auto 2000 in Bedford where they have said its terminal and needs rebuilding. As an independant Porsche specialist we have to accept what they say. They dont build engines so are not going to profit from this, well apart from remove and refit the engine

I know Autofarm in Oxfordshire do this - but haven't used them myself.

Hartech have a very good reputation BTW in rebuilding 996 and Boxster engines. Your friend should definately talk to them about his options.

996 Engine Problems

Wow an excellent source of info on the Hartech site....... but am not sure I would have just bought a 996 if I had read all the material on there about the engine problems...... makes it seem like a question of "when" it happens not "if".

Have these problems been carried over into the 997 or is it too early to tell?

Andy don't get too worried, failures are still in the minority, it's just that you hear about the failures all over the internet :(

What you find on the Hartech site is if the worst happens what can be done, not to be too worried and that there is light at the end of the tunnel :)

I'm sorry to say the same happens on the 997.

Just to reiterate, failures are few and far between, don't worry :)

Speak to Tony Wright at Wrightune in South Oxfordshire.

You could try some breakers yards and get another engine for less than £8k I'm sure. Try Douglas Valley, and also Van Zweeden.

Thanks for the reassurance

Hi Damien,

Thanks for the ressurance.... must admit I was aware of the potential "issues" it's just that the Hartech site is so......... descriiptive! I will keep my fingers crossed.... and hope that the OPC warranty addresses any problems that occur!

Reading their analysis fills me with dread that many more will eventually fail. I have no issue with engines wearing out, its the huge costs to rebuild thats worrying

Sounds more like an intermediate shaft to me - get a copy of 911 & Porsche world or any others and there are plenty of engines for sale that have had these problems posted by Hartech and others put right for around 3500 grand plus your donor engine and they are fully warranted by the garage. At the end of the day an engine is an engine even if it's a Porsche and they can be mended correctly by a decent Porsche indi workshop.

It's also a great time to look at upgrades if you are getting a new engine and a lot of the American engine rebuilds do bigger bore conversions and more power etc. (get a supercharger)

Best advise is to get some 911 magazines and start looking around and enquiring.

Hartech say that every engine they have stripped down has a problem with the liners, which I believe. But the thing is they are surely not in the habit of stripping an engine unless there is a problem...

I saw somewhere else (can't remember where) that the suggestion was that about 5-10% of engines have a problem. Someone in the Telegraph Motoring section last week reckoned that the pre-2000MY engines were most at risk.

(Yes, mine's a 1999! lol)
