Hello everyone. As a fairly recent Porsche owner I was hoping to get some advice and your forum looked a good place to ask. I bought a 996 turbo tip (2002) in October last year. Having just had a full service and 'a few bits put right' for the meagre sum of £3k from Porsche I didn't really want to head there again too soon for another bill as my partner will definately make me sell the car I've wanted for years! To get to the point I've noticed what seems to be a loss of power that comes and goes when accelerating hard. It feels like it is momentarily holding back every couple of seconds. I put the display onto the bar reading and indeed the reading jumps from 1.2 (which indeed I could never reach before, never seemed to go over 0.9) and 0.4 /0.5 as the power comes and goes. It isn't greatly noticable ( a passenger probably wouldn't feel it), however having done 10K in her I can tell.

Any ideas? Dare I go to Porsche? Thanks in advance.

Hi Richard - welcome to the forum. Personally I can't help (I am a fairly new to Porsche myself) but there are plenty of guys on here who will. I didn't know the TT's OBC could display bar charts for the Turbo boost. That must be a nice thing to watch.

Hi Richard,

Sounds as if you are getting over boost then the ecu is going into safe mode/limp mode and limiting the boost to .5.

I suspect that you will have to get the car plugged into a diagnostic machine, as there are quite a few components that can cause this.

regards

Perry

Maxie, thanks for the speedy reply. Yes it is quite interesting to watch it climb, although it's usually better to watch the road as it reaches the 1.0 bar pressure!

Richard.

Cheers for that Perry. Am I right in thinking then that I hadn't previously seen it go over 1.0 before do you think?

Richard

Richard I presume you have an x50 or it has been remapped? My boggo 996tt will only boost to 0.7/0.8 bar. I did once see it hit 0.9 for a moment after coming off the loud pedal but only the once.

which means you car is OEM, as IIRC std boost is no more than 0.9

Thanks Dave and Sundeep, wish I'd spoken to you all earlier, I've just had the major service done at Hatfield, 10% off would have been nice.

Dave, I must be honest I don't know what a x50 or re mapped means. The car is bog standard (if you can apply that terminology to a 996tt) and as you said I never caught it going above 0.9 and rarely at that, so to see it hit 1.2 and then drop and rise I suspected something was amiss.

I'll pop to Hatfield clutching my cheque book. Annoyingly when I bought the car it had a warranty but when I called to renew it they couldn't trace the details from the reg, when I came back off holiday and called with the VIN it had expired and they wouldn't renew. They now want £3k to fix a very minor oil leak before they will put the warrenty back on. It might be worth paying the £3k then getting the warrenty and then seeing if there is a boost issue.

Cheers Richard.

The 996tt came in two guises from the factory - The standard 420bhp (like mine) and the 996tt x50. This was a slightly more tuned version pushing out 450bhp.

Remapping of the ECU (the engines brain if you like) can give amazing performance improvements - More torque more bhp. With a 200 cell cat exhaust and an ECU remap 500bhp is easily obtainable from a standard 996tt for only a few £000's.

Sorry to hear about the warranty issue and the oil leak. Would it not be better to let an indie fix the leak. Then take it back to Porsche for the warranty to be reinstated and then get them to investigate the boost problem?

Yes it is a standard 420. It's a good idea about the independant garage, I just feel a bit nervous about letting a non Porsche garage do it especially as it's an engine out job. Am I being over protective and do you think they would be a lot cheaper?

IMO the specialists probably know more about the cars than the OPC technicians do. Like many other forum members I only take my car to the OPC for the service stamp to maintain the warranty. All other work not covered by the warranty is done by Parr who are held in high regard as are Northway, 9M and JZM to name a few more.

Labour rates alone on an engine out job will save you £100's.

Good luck

DOn't be scared of going to an indie. Especially to get the problems sorted prior to getting a 111 point check done and getting another warranty.

Again thanks all. I think going to an indie is probably the best way to go. You all seem to have your warranties. I take it whilst these are pretty costly they are definately worth it? I live in Rickmansorth can anyone tell me which iks the nearest of the ones you have suggested and their phone number please.

Cheers Richard.
