does anyone have info or even better, experience, with converting a targa to a coupe? I'm told that the uk is the place to ask this question as targas are not desirable here.

thanks neil

Targa's were, once upon a time, seen as the poor relation to a coupe - mainly due to the delightful British climate making swiss cheese of the Targa's body:

Rain collects in the rear tub where the drain channels get clogged, this added to water with changes in humidity and the salt applied to the roads in winter spelled disaster for the Targa.

That said, the 'gap' between Targa and coupe prices has narrowed to a very small margin - and Targas are highly sought after - as with anything this old it's condition, condition and condition that matter.

Converting a Targa to a coupe is technically possible - although you'd end up with a much heavier coupe shell (there's a lot of reinforcement to the shell to enable it to cope without a roof) - and in all honesty, the car will never have the value of a coupe - and it's easy to identify a Targa from its chassis number - the sixth digit will always be a '1' so you can't hide the fact.

In my honest opinion it would be cheaper to repair a coupe than to convert a Targa to a coupe.

In real terms yes, but most are LHD imports - UK Targa numbers were very small and few survived - from memory 34 2.4S Targas, only three known on the register and a total of 12 believed to have survived. To put in to context, that a fifth of the RHD 2.7RS's that have survived!

LOADS of US Targas where the model was very, very popular and the climate helped them survive
