At the weekend I joined up with other owners of the 80s impact bumber cars and went for a blast through the North Yorkshire dales, Skipton -> Settle -> Hawes -> Masham. Fantastic country side and brilliant driving.

There were 14 cars on the run and it always makes me smile when you see people doing the double take and smiling/waving when they realise that there are quite a few cars in the convoy. Makes you realise that cars aren't quite the hate modern pariah that they are portrayed. A996 and silver 930 going in the opposite direction got very excited and flashed the whole convoy.

THe best thing is that even though these cars around the 20 plus year old mark and well under powered compared with the modern 996/7s, they are still pretty fast. 2nd & 3rd gear over takes are truely exhilerating, although you do run out of power quite soon, but 85 in 3rd is ok. And the race to the readline produces the most amazing noise.

As noticed by Tim in his TT thread, blasting round the bends soon makes you realise that the car was way more capable than I am, and I ran out of talent long before it did. Following a gorgeous Guards red 930 my heart was in my mouth a couple of times and the car just treated it like a walk in the park.

It does one hell of a lot, normally the minute you decide to get the car out! But it is particularly warm and gorgeous at the moment. Even managed to get the lawn cut yesterday for the first time this year.

Mark - That is a lovely collection of cars, although one appears to have gone AWOL, I only count 13!........I know that area well and would have loved to have been among the convoy...a real buzz!!....some lovely 'driving' roads!....Is that your SSE towards the rear?

I must admit I agree, in the main, with your comment about people's attitude towards the older 911's. I've had some lovely conversations with complete strangers about my old girl! One couple refused point blank to accept she was nearly 19 years old!!.....LOL :D

Howard,

Yes mine is third from the back, sandwiched at that point between lovely reg 930 and an 3.2 with duck tail, round crome mirrors, fibre bumpers and a fantastic sounding SSI exhaust.

keep an eye out, there will be another drive it later in the summer.

That is one hell of a line-up, I would love to have been part of it - fab weather and gorgeous countryside. I bet that was an absolutely brilliant day. You're a lucky, lucky man.

Anyone dan saff fancy it? Perhaps a drive through the Kent countryside or out into Essex and .... whatever counties are out that way ?

Cool, come on let's do it. A weekend in June, with guarantee of nice weather and us soft southerners can give those well 'ard northerners a run for their money (possibly  ). On a serious note, it would be fab. if we could do something like "supersport's" adventure. Take a run out for the day, nice pub lunch and back again - sounds like heaven.
