Coolant Leak

Hi Everyone,

My 996 (99 c4) has just used a litre of coolant in just one week. There seem to be no traces on my drive way or around the coolant tank itself. There are no plumes of smoke from the exhaust either.

Any suggestions of where to look first?

Many Thanks in advance

Loose/ill fitting filler cap on the coolant bottle itself?

How do you know it's used a litre of coolant? The system is pressurised causing the level to drop ie. you can fill it up to max but this will drop to min after a drive, Any excess coolant will be 'evacuated' from the car.

Hi

The level fell to below minimum and the coolant warning light came on. It took a litre to bring it up to max.

Hi Asim,

This happened to me a little while back with no visible trace of coolant on garage floor. Took it to the OPC and found a number of leakages in the cooling system. Parts replaced, coolant level stable again.

I would guess that you have leaky rads. A weak spot on the 996. You probably aren't seeing any coolant on the floor because it is under far less pressure when parked up. i.e. a weaping radiator becomes a leaking radiator when driving.

Jay T - would you suggest carrying a spare bottle of coolant around with you just in case? I do in the Golf.

Hi.

My 996 did the same thing. Used to need coolant refill every 4k or so. Had the coolant tank replaced by specialist and it has been fine since. Although right after the refit there was an air bubble in the system which caused the level to drop again. Was rectified by garage however.

Pete, was it easy to see the leak from the coolant tank?

same thing happened to me, although levels did not drop as sharply so quickly.

rads replaced under warranty.

I did carry around a bottle of coolant for a while. But never really needed to use it ad-hoc. Just topped up periodically at home.

had the same problem early january of this year- it turned out to be a hairline crack in the water reservior only found when a good friend in the trade put the tank under a presure rig which caused a very slight spry of coolant you could harly see. replaced tank-job done- cost £180-00 in total. opc wanted to change rads....didnt ask how much :)

if your rads are leaking they will spray the inside of the bumper when your driving as they will be under pressure, so go for a spin, stop, and have a look in your front air intakes for signs of moisture.

If there's none to be seen the other weak spot is the reservoir.

The coolant reservoir cracking is very common - I'd have this checked first.
