hey guys,

found a 2002 52 996 TT in black with grey leather. 44k miles FPSH. Private sale

Have put a small deposit down as the owner is very genuine and the history and car are immaculate. It has just had the major spark plug service at a cost of £1400 and new radiators. It drives as it should and any known issues with the car (front tyres etc) were openly discussed with the owner and incorporated into the deal.

I am due to collect next week and have done HPI and a check with porsche about original supplied spec and it all matches up as it should.

It had the porsche 111 pt check back in august and was fine bar 2 tyres that were replaced.

What other checks should i do? I spoke to porsche about the 111 pt check and they said that an RAC one is better and more thorough.

Should i get the RAC done on it? Do they do on site, or does it need to be towed etc etc?

Its up north so limited to what i can do as far as getting mechanical friends to look at etc.

thanks for input

Piers

First of all congratulations, however as I am sure many others will say it is imperative that you get a proper inspection done by someone like Peter Morgan if buying privately.

Yep, I agree with Dave, get a proper PPI done, will give you that much more confidence in what you're buying b4 you part with your hard earned.......onyl reaosn I didn't on mine was bcos it was still under the original warranty, but on anything that wasn't would always get a PPI......

That does amaze me given that the 111pt check is what they use for accepting the car onto the warranty scheme. Just goes to show that's not worth the paper its written on.

As other have stated, go with a PPI, but Peter Morgan doesn't go oop ere in t north.

Where is the car located? Might be worth asking a local dealer.

spoke to RAC - for £315 they do a 166 point check at the owner's premises and provide a written and verbal report (conversation with the engineer)

On a porsche they do the Inspection Plus which takes around 4-5 hours and covers pretty much everything from what i see on the web - i think i may go for this.

Any experience with these checks?

cheers ;o)

Still be inclined to use a Porsche specialist who operates in the rough area of the car. RAC will tell you if the brake pads need doing but won't be very experienced with the nuances of the 911 - particularly a car with the complexities of the 996TT. Boost hoses, spinny turbo things and all that malarkey.

Where is the car so someone can recommend a nearby specialist?

its Bradford/Halifax area

thankyou ;o)

Piers, congrats, i am very jealous.

I would consider one of Peter Morgans's associates who cover the north. Nothing concrete in the way of bad experiences to back it up, but i would just be wary of using a big organisation who do not have any specific knowledge of such a specialised car.

Thanks Haran, glad i posted here.

I'm an 11 previous BMW man, so i'd be more inclined to trust my judgement when buying a beemer, but with "My First Porsche" I wanna be sure i dont get it home to discover a nice cracked head or something!!!

cheers

The bloke off of Specialist Cars of Malton does a lot of shouting on PH. Dunno if they're good or not but are a known Porsche specialist in that neck of the woods.

If it had the 111 point check in August surely it has Porsche warranty on it still? In which case is there any need to check further anything that would be covered by that?

Agreed though, that a PPI to check for repairs, etc not covered by warranty would be sensible.

Didn't someone recommend the garage alongside GMUND recently for PPI's in that area.

I'd be tempted to give it a miss on a car of that age if it had the extended warranty and was convinced by the current owner. But totally agree that a PPI is money well spent.

Doesn't the Porsche check highlight any issues arising out of damage or abuse (as much as any other would?).

Anyway, good luck Piers you getting into an awesome car IMHO.

Congrats on finding the TT Piers - hope it works out well.

thanks guys - many times i tried to get myself into the GT3, but with speed humps, fixed angle seats & rock hard suspension i believe the TT is a great choice - the E30 M3 will stay my track tool!

It had the major service at 43k ish - its now at 44500 - everything that needed doing was done at a cost of £1400. It has new rads that cost him £800. I think they did a check at that time too (whether it was 111 or not i dont know, but it had red/green/amber on the sheet, with everything green apart from the rear tyres which he has done). He didnt renew the warranty as was planning on selling of course.

He uses it everyday and the only real signs of this are a few small kerb marks on the wheels which is no disaster IMHO - the interior is as new.

I'll give Porsche Leeds and Malton a call.

thanks again

PS: I'll post some pics once its in my possession and all is well, dont wanna talk too soon!!! ;o)

Some porsche dealers are refusing to do 111 point checks in case they miss something and you sue them

I had an strange experience a couple of months ago

I bought an 18 month old LHD 996 C2 Tip Cab for a customer from a Porsche main dealer in germany

Ny customer was in croydon,

so it seemed stupid to take the car to cornwall, have it serviced/ inspected valeted and delivered back to croydon,

So i thought car delivered by transporter to an OPC, 111 point check, Zymoled by john drake deliver to customer

1 OPC wouldn't do a 111 point check as the car was 18 months old, told me to get an RAC, only did a 111 point check if i had it serviced,
