Sarah - right in at the deep end with a 964. I have been told that the engine rebuild is one of the most important things to look for.

If you are unsure, a professional inspection would be a good idea. He could tell you what is a good price. I would hazard a guess at between £16-£18K if it is in really good nic.

Welcome BTW.

thank you ... why do you say in at the deepend with a964 do you know why the engine re build is important? would the rac be good for a pro inspection ? sorry for all the questions just need the info thanks again...

Sarah, forget the RAC, waste of ££ on a 964. Where is the car? A local independant porsche specialist would be much better for inspection.

By no means an expert in the 964 area (have a 996). Most people go for a newer Porsche first, tend to get more problems with an old one and have to love them more. So certainly more complicated than buying a newer one.

There are a few guys who do inspections, I think Phil Morgan is one. There are others who have been mentioned in previous threads, will try and look them up.

After hte engine has been rebuilt, will be good for another 15 years. So that is a bit bill that won't come for a while.

Get someone who knows Porsches rather than the RAC...

A 964 is a good buy if you can get a good one. It's almost as quick as a 993, but a lot cheaper, well built (some say better than 993) and most inherant problems such as fly wheel and distributor belt should've been sorted. If the engine has been rebuilt, that means most of the fixes would've been installed.

Was the respray for cosmetic reason or crash repair? Again, get a good PPI, as with all Porsche, if you get a bad one it can end up costing you thousands!

as stated a PPI from a reputable Porsche specialist would be very useful, best £2/300 you'll spend...

remember you are buying a classic car not anything an RAC techie would understand....

try Phil Raby or Peter Morgan

If Peter Morgan can go that far, then he's probably the best one to get, or JZM if they can get the car there. Sounds like the car's going to look go at least on the surface, so an inspection is essential to see if it's as good underneath as it is on the surface.

that's can be quite common on the odd 964's so nothing to worry about there

Tiptronic's are good for 150k to 250k miles, very reliable

the car is priced at 12995 .. its a choice between that one or a bmw m3 you have been most helpfull all of you... peter morgan lives close to where i live so he is easy to get in contact with thanks to you people i have a lot more confidence in buying a porsche if not now in the future thanks.....

If Peter Morgan gives the thumb up then you won't have much to worry about. Even if the car's not perfect, he'll let you know what needs fixing. His report is the most comprehensive than anything I've seen!

13K seems a reasonable price.
