But this is ridiculous - or perhaps its just a trait of the boxer configuration.

When my car 2002 C4S (so the 3.6L engine) is started from cold sounds great (a whine then a bark - stay with me its difficult to describe!)

But when I start it from hot - if its off for a minute or two/or if I have stalled it(happened once) - it sounds like a bag of old nails - or an old tractor.

When I start it from hot if its only been off a minute or two I don't wait for the oil measurement count down which could say its got 2 minutes or more until measurement - I assume thats OK (the oil measurement is optional isn't it?)

Is this clattering on a hot start normal?

yes ! gets worse when it gets colder ! but as soon as it warms up the C4S sounds like one of the best standard 911's around

You should hear a GT3 start up from cold (esp mk1) - they sound like bits are going to come flying out the casing!

Also, there aren't many engines which don't have a bit of a grumble at hot starting

Dunc
